Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

What Parents Get Wrong About Recruiting | Steve Rodriguez
Q: What's overrated in recruiting from your perspective as a head coach at different levels?
Metrics have value for development, but they're not a guarantee; the best evaluators use metrics as tools while prioritizing how a player competes between the lines and handles real-game pressure.
How Does JUCO Compare to D1? | Jonathan Estes
Q: What makes a JUCO player a good fit for Weatherford as opposed to a direct-to-D1 path?
Weatherford looks for players who can contribute immediately and who fit the program's balanced approach to offense, defense, and pitching. The right timing and fit matter as much as raw talent, and there's value in players who are hungry to move up and who can succeed at the next level when given the opportunity.
How Does JUCO Compare to D1? | Jonathan Estes
Q: When you go watch a game, what are you specifically looking for in a player?
We look for players who can impact the game in a concrete way—production, but also the ability to progress and adjust. If someone can show up against a good arm and perform, that matters more than a perfect stat line, and we value walks and on-base ability for hitters while also weighing pitchability and control for pitchers.
Be Process-Driven, Not Outcome-Driven
Q: What does it mean to have a plan vs. an approach?
A plan is specific to the situation (pitcher, environment, etc.), while an approach is your internal hitting philosophy; you may adjust your plan based on the at-bat, but you should not let emotions drive those changes.
The Mindset of a Major League Hitter | Curtis Granderson
Q: Did you have a two-strike approach?
Granderson explained that he aimed to maintain the same mental approach in two-strike counts as in other counts, emphasizing the need to be prepared and not overly aggressive.
