  • Understandable and practical content - not nearly as many ads as other people have stated

The content in the podcast is put together in a way that is easy to understand and implement into your training. It does not have filler/conversational content like other Triathlon focused podcasts do. I enjoy that the episodes are typically 15-30 minutes long and go a great job introducing practical pointers for your workouts/races within that time.

Other reviews have stated that this is a very ad focused podcast. I would disagree - although he does have episode sponsors I do not find that the... more

  • Really good and know their stuff.

I’ve been listening to TOA for a while now and absolutely love the knowledge they have on everything triathlon. They have a way of reassuring you and providing you with the confidence into race day and helping you dial in your training. Definitely recommend listening to them.

Open Water Swim Skills: Sighting, Drafting, Managing Panic, Wetsuit Fit & Race Day Pacing (IRONMAN Q&A) | Ep 591
Q: What should I do if I start to panic during the swim?
Control breathing with slow exhalations, break the swim into chunks, and use an anchor like counting strokes or a motivating mantra to stay focused.
Open Water Swim Skills: Sighting, Drafting, Managing Panic, Wetsuit Fit & Race Day Pacing (IRONMAN Q&A) | Ep 591
Q: What should I do to stop going off too hard in open water on race day?
Practice pacing awareness with pool sets at race pace, use repeats with short rests to learn sustainable effort, and eventually rely on internal feel rather than constantly checking the watch.
Open Water Swim Skills: Sighting, Drafting, Managing Panic, Wetsuit Fit & Race Day Pacing (IRONMAN Q&A) | Ep 591
Q: How many open water sessions should I do before Ironman/70.3?
Aim for four, ideally six to eight, because pool work alone isn't enough; exposure to navigation, wetsuit handling, and dealing with anxiety is essential.
Open Water Swim Skills: Sighting, Drafting, Managing Panic, Wetsuit Fit & Race Day Pacing (IRONMAN Q&A) | Ep 591
Q: How important is sighting and what's the best way to improve it?
Sight as little as possible directly on buoys; line up a large, fixed landmark on shore behind the buoys to sight off, and use both objects to determine if you're swimming straight, refining this with practice.
Open Water Swim Skills: Sighting, Drafting, Managing Panic, Wetsuit Fit & Race Day Pacing (IRONMAN Q&A) | Ep 591
Q: Coach Rob, I've got much faster in the pool this winter, but my open water times are still not very good. Why is that?
Because pool speed and open water speed are related but not the same; open water requires additional skills like sighting, drafting, navigation, wetsuit fit, and handling panic, which can influence distance swum and overall time.
