  • Understandable and practical content - not nearly as many ads as other people have stated

The content in the podcast is put together in a way that is easy to understand and implement into your training. It does not have filler/conversational content like other Triathlon focused podcasts do. I enjoy that the episodes are typically 15-30 minutes long and go a great job introducing practical pointers for your workouts/races within that time.

Other reviews have stated that this is a very ad focused podcast. I would disagree - although he does have episode sponsors I do not find that the... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

FTP, TSS, Indoor vs Outdoor Riding & Bike Power vs Endurance (Listener Q&A) | Ep 583
Q: How hard should I ride on race day if I'm targeting a 280 TSS budget, and how does 60-70% FTP translate to times?
Aim to ride so your bike portion produces around 280 TSS in total, adjusting your relative FTP percentage based on ride duration and your ability to run well afterward. Use modeling tools like Best Bike Split to align pace with energy left for the marathon and accept that faster athletes may ride at a higher percentage of FTP while shorter riders can sustain more intensity without sacrificing run performance.
Training in Bad Weather, FTP Testing, TSS Explained: Listener Q&A| Ep 582
Q: Kara asks for advice on FTP vs speed for a first 70.3 in Weymouth and how to approach training given timeframes.
Rob suggests eight weeks of FTP-focused cycling to raise FTP by 5-10% (sometimes more for new cyclists), then four months of hill work, aerodynamics improvements, and equipment tweaks; also recommends using race-cutoff speeds and considering aero gear to close the gap between FTP and race performance.
Training in Bad Weather, FTP Testing, TSS Explained: Listener Q&A| Ep 582
Q: Anonymous caller asks about an unexpectedly high TSS on a long ride and how to interpret it.
Rob explains TSS budgeting for Ironman: a 180K bike leg typically has a 280 TSS budget; if a session goes much higher, back off power and/or check device calibration and outdoor FTP alignment, and uses sponsor tools to plan hydration and carbs for race day.
Training in Bad Weather, FTP Testing, TSS Explained: Listener Q&A| Ep 582
Q: Ben asks whether to focus on longer sustained efforts or short high-intensity intervals for Ironman Cosmo in November.
Rob recommends a two-block approach: a dedicated eight-week FTP-focused block to build the engine, followed by a shift to longer endurance rides and occasional sweet-spot sessions; emphasizes avoiding excessive high-intensity VO2 max work and prioritizing race-specific endurance.
Training in Bad Weather, FTP Testing, TSS Explained: Listener Q&A| Ep 582
Q: Ben asks about stacking a swim with another workout and how to handle a high FTP test versus duration.
Rob advises that for beginners or tight schedules, it's acceptable to do a swim first and then a bike or run, and explains that a 20-minute FTP test with the result scaled to 95% is a practical and common approach for determining steady-state endurance, while also noting that longer, sustained efforts are more predictive for Ironman performance than short high-intensity intervals.
