  • A Miscarriage is not an Abortion

It is insensitive to use the words “missed abortion” to talk about miscarriages. I know this is what they’re medically coded as but this is triggering for people who have lost wanted pregnancies. It’s disgusting how the hosts misuse language to make their listeners believe abortions and miscarriage are the same thing.

  • Everyone NEEDS to listen!

I found this podcast to hit on the very important issues that have come up in the past few years in regard to providing adequate health care for women in North America. I am still finding it very hard to understand that we find ourselves at this point in time, and I thank the healthcare professionals VERY MUCH for standing up for and standing beside the women that need abortion care in the USA. I live in Canada but feel this type of law could be coming…I really hope I am wrong! Thank you for thi... more

  • I find too many (especially anti-abortion) discussions of this topic gloss over the fact that pregnancy is not health neutral. Having actual doctors discuss this subject and their informative guests has been invaluable. I’ve read at least two books by their guests to help me understand abortion rights and why it’s an ethical standpoint to provide abortion access. I suggest more people listen to this podcast and read works by their guests.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

What we are talking about when we talk about abortion
Q: Are there themes or lessons that come out that are things that we can do to be better in the care that we're providing?
Renee advises medical providers to offer common questions patients might have, foster open communication, and ensure they know the positions on abortion of their healthcare providers to avoid surprises during care.
What we are talking about when we talk about abortion
Q: What do these narratives usually look like, and what do we risk losing when we only amplify the stories that fit them?
Renee discusses how many abortion narratives are shaped to evoke pity, which often oversimplifies the experiences of those seeking abortions and ignores their autonomy.
A rabbi, a pastor, and a doctor…
Q: So with things changing politically in the US., there is a risk that our ability to provide and teach abortion provision in medical school and residency may change. What do you think will happen in the future?
The scary thing with the current administration is not that Congress would pass a law, but I think there are many ways that abortion access can be further eroded meaningfully.
A rabbi, a pastor, and a doctor…
Q: Can you talk to us about kind of what led you to reproductive justice and advocacy work and kind of what fuels your interest?
I think my understanding of this issue in a religious framework came later in understanding that this was something that was playing out along religious lines and understanding that my voice as a rabbi, as a clergy person, as a religious leader, I felt like I needed to be part of that fight.
A rabbi, a pastor, and a doctor…
Q: Can you talk a little bit about, as a reverend and sort of in your religious thinking, how did that lead you to reproductive justice work and to how you see abortion fitting into reproductive choices?
I ended up doing a couple of trainings that my organization, RCRC, offered to seminary students. I often say that I received my call to ministry within the walls of an abortion clinic, which really makes people mad, but it's the truth.
