Want to give a shout out and thanks to the Podcast and specifically Tom Nelson, Tom Gobin and also Joe Pyburn. My father Lonnie grew up with Tom Nelson and Tom Gobin. Tom N. was kind enough to invite my Dad out in the new Duckworth Atlas to fish for Coho, he had a blast and learned a ton! I had asked my dad if both Toms and Joey wouldn’t mind signing my best flasher for good luck and they did and I just wanted to reach out and say thanks. It means the world that you guys are willing to pass the ... more

  • The real reason people have a problem with hunting and fishing.

Is because these guys and others like them come across as self righteous d!ckh3@ds. I’m a BHA member and I voted for our former governor 3 times. Do I agree with everything he did? No. Worst Governor ever? Hardly. At least we can take comfort that in the future we won’t have hunting seasons because all the national forests have burned down.

  • Incredible Chinook Salmon Advice!

Love the show and love the podcast! no fluff, just facts, tips, and tactics that work! Recently, Joey gave me some tips on rigging an anchovy in a helmet in regards to the trailing hook leader length… His advice was spot on! when it comes to fishing bait, Joey is one of the best there is on the Puget Sound! Love the info gentlemen, keep up the great work with the podcast and radio show! See you on the water! - Dan Keller, @mymortgageguydan

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Hour 1: Coastal Chinook & Rufus Woods Updates
Q: How do you coach your guys up to react to the hover fishing bite, Austin?
Austin explains that hover fishing bites can be very subtle; anglers must pay close attention to the rod, lift slowly when weight is felt, and then set the hook, acknowledging it takes reps to get proficient.
Hour 2: Kevin John Talks Skagit & Baker Lake Sockeye
Q: How is the thermal structure of the water affecting lure depth choices offshore?
John Keizer and the crew discuss using the Seeker/probe to determine depth and temperature, allowing precise placement of lures exactly above thermoclines where upriver brights feed, improving hit rates.
Hour 2: Kevin John Talks Skagit & Baker Lake Sockeye
Q: What gear and bait are proving most effective for sockeye so far this season?
Kevin John emphasizes sand shrimp as the primary bait on this river segment, with coon shrimp also working in certain sections; he suggests keeping a varied selection of sizes and colors to adapt to changing bite conditions.
Hour 2: Kevin John Talks Skagit & Baker Lake Sockeye
Q: Tell us, tell us of red salmon in the Skagit and potentially in Baker Lake soon.
Ben Rosenbaum explains that there is a strong run showing early signs, with counts indicating a healthy start and optimism that the fish will continue to push in, though the opening dynamics can be variable from year to year.
Hour 1: Counting Down to the Ocean Salmon Opener
Q: What kind of attitude do you like to see when guests join a day on the water?
Guests who come in with curiosity, openness to learning, and a willingness to adapt their expectations tend to have the best experiences, especially those with little prior fishing experience. Focusing on the process and learning over immediate success helps everyone enjoy the trip and improves outcomes.
