  • Interesting Pod

I listened to an episode on Lands thoughts on China and find the host to do little to consider China’s thought from a leftist framework. Deng XiaoPings ideas are presented as in line with libertarian thought which couldn’t be farther from the truth. I think he should spend some time learning and reading Deng and the actual goals of Deng before commenting on whether Land makes an accurate assessment of China’s rise. I think Land did see something through the looking glass but more uses China to s... more

  • Terrible host

The host is a midwit who has the capacity to identify interesting and important ideas and thinkers, but then systematically debases them with his constant interjections related to his own narrow and banal worldview

  • Well researched but editorializing not so great

This guy has done his homework but could do without his editorializing and commentary. The Burroughs episode was tough lol. He literally goes on a 5 minute side convo about how kids don’t really need parenting? Lol. Like do better my dude. Edit your work and reign in the asides lol

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The Information State: Politics in the Age of Total Control with Jacob Siegel
Q: Does AI tip the scales in favor of government control of information, or will it dissipate government control by creating unpredictable, chaotic conditions?
The theory suggests both dynamics are at play: AI could consolidate control through more centralized decision-making, but its complexity and non-uniform adoption could also enable more unpredictable, decentralized, or resistant behavior that complicates control.
Montaigne, IVF & Embryo Selection, Q&A
Q: Would in-utero editing also allow for people to give their kids genes that neither parent has?
I'm not sure what the hard limits are, but it seems to be that it's already known how to do certain forms of limited spot editing.
Intoxicated by Truth: Plato's Symposium with Alex Priou
Q: How do we separate the kind of Socratic charm and the Socratic charisma from just the off-putting, annoying variety?
It involves understanding the context and intention behind the Socratic approach, as he often aims to provoke thought rather than just charm.
Intoxicated by Truth: Plato's Symposium with Alex Priou
Q: What do you think Plato is really trying to teach us here?
Plato seems to be conveying a message about power, charisma, and the social performance issues surrounding truth-telling.
Intoxicated by Truth: Plato's Symposium with Alex Priou
Q: Based on your reading of the symposium, would you say it's good or bad to get absolutely hammered at a dinner party?
It depends on your tolerance for alcohol; Socrates can handle it, others, maybe not a great idea.
