  • An Important & Thoughtful Perspective on One of the Many Strands of American Conservatism

Highly recommended. A worthy counterpoise to the soulless and undifferentiated political podcast slop that abounds these days as seemingly everyone piles onto the lucrative podcast bandwagon (does anyone not have a show these days?).

An enlightened refuge from the prevailing rightthink (or, more accurately, “little-think”) of our ubiquitous media Sensibles.™️

(Updated:) The new paywall is disappointing, however. It’s not like Claremont needs the money for “bonus content,” surely. This is a ba... more

  • Won’t be paying

Sadly, the level of discourse has gone downhill over the last couple of years. I used to love this podcast, and now that they are cutting me off by making me pay, I will no longer be listening to it, if only In the background.

  • Lost this listener

No balance. Just complete “we won” and “isn’t this great” ignorance. Most of the actions of the resurrected administration should have stayed thought experiments.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Supreme Court Roundup with John Eastman, Part 1
Q: What is John Eastman's ideal process for sorting out the balance of executive power and agency accountability?
Eastman suggests that the goal is not to expand executive power, but to shift the buck so the president and the people can hold agencies accountable, potentially through clearer removal authority and more Congress-directed control, while preserving constitutional constraints.
The Right's Media Problem—And How to Fix It
Q: What is the core misperception the right has about media today?
Media is more than a distribution channel; it shapes the public mind and by extension which laws are politically feasible, so it should be treated as a primary institution, not just a platform for opinions.
America's Privileged Class – The Press, Libel, and Defamation
Q: What exactly was Brennan arguing in the Sullivan majority, and how does that clash with older libertarian-liberty understandings of libel?
The Sullivan majority created the actual malice standard, arguing that libel against public officials could be addressed within First Amendment principles, which departed from the earlier, stricter protection of reputation and required proof of falsity or public wrongdoing with intent; this shifted the balance toward robust discourse while creating a higher bar for plaintiffs.
The Trump Tariffs Go to Court
Q: What are your thoughts on the Supreme Court decision regarding the tariffs?
The decision touches on the important separation of powers between Congress's control over the purse and the President's foreign policy powers.
Maduro No Más: Venezuela's Future After His Capture ft. Josh Treviño & R.J. Pestritto
Q: What will an ideal regime change look like in Venezuela?
Josh Treviño suggests it would resemble current U.S. actions, emphasizing a cautious approach that considers existing power dynamics in the region.
