Steve and JMM make a great duo! There is timely commentary on current events, presented in an easy to understand way, even for those who don’t know much about politics. For political nerds, Steve always has fun historical facts and insights from his long career. This show is a gem and I always appreciate listening or watching the YouTube video.

  • One of The Absolute Best

I find your podcast so incredibly engaging. It’s current, with the perfect amount of historical content; it’s thoughtful, deep and light all at the same time. I very much agree with the last reviewer who said that it is honest. 100%!!!

I really appreciate the level of curiosity that is brought into the conversation, with a natural wittiness and real “level headedness” and content that greatly matters if you live in or near Ontario :)

Thank you - Love you two!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Should governments subsidize Ontario's auto sector?
Q: What should be the takeaway from Honda's decision to pause or cancel its $15 billion investment in Alliston?
The guest suggests re-evaluating subsidies while recognizing the need to preserve access to the U.S. market and considering policy tools that support long-term competitiveness without over-reliance on industrial subsidies.
Does the 2026 budget really 'protect' Ontario?
Q: Why hasn't the government been able to balance the budget in the promised timeframe?
The interview frames the delay as a consequence of events like the pandemic, inflation, tariffs, and broader global instability, while stressing commitment to balancing over time and not cutting core services.
How free is information under Ford's government?
Q: Why is retroactivity a problem in this context?
Retroactivity could invalidate a court order requiring disclosure of information that had already been deemed accessible, effectively reversing prior transparency gains and undermining judicial decisions.
How free is information under Ford's government?
Q: What changes is the Ford government proposing to the province's Freedom of Information framework?
The government would shield the premier, cabinet ministers, their staff, and similar political actors from FOI requests, while preserving access to civil servants' communications; this would dramatically shrink the public's ability to see the decision-makers' communications.
Ontario's energy strategy, Niagara amalgamation, and how to run for city council
Q: What advice does Amber Morley offer for people considering running for city council?
She stresses having a clear mission, building a coalition, engaging community volunteers, and understanding fundraising realities; also highlights starting early, volunteering, and being ready to balance representation with leadership responsibilities.
