  • Debates require the right debaters

What makes a good debate interesting to listen is with debaters that can understand both side of a coin. Please keep that in mind. Debaters pushing their narrative at any cost eventually leads to weak arguments that is insulting to the listeners’ intelligence.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

World on Edge: Long War in Iran, Islamic Republic 2.0, and Canada’s Choices
Q: Is regime change a feasible objective for Canada through air power, and what are the prospects for Iran's regime in the current conflict?
Regime change from air power is not feasible; prolonged conflict could lead to regime weakness or collapse, but there is no clear, stable path to replacement, and a weaker regime could create greater regional instability without a clear alternative ready to take over.
World on Edge: Long War in Iran, Islamic Republic 2.0, and Canada’s Choices
Q: What is the realistic role Canada can play in the Gulf states given its limited military capabilities, and how should it balance relations with the US?
Canada should not pursue offensive action; instead it can offer intelligence, surveillance, and diplomatic support to Gulf states, while aligning carefully with the US to avoid conflict with Washington and protect broader Canadian interests, including economic and domestic political considerations.
John Baird: Should Canada Support the Iran War?
Q: Should there be a debate in parliament right now about the next steps for Canada?
Yes, debate in parliament is appropriate and important, especially in a significant geopolitical shift; leaders should be on record about their positions.
John Baird: Should Canada Support the Iran War?
Q: If you were the foreign minister today, what would you whisper in the air of the prime minister to tell him to do in terms of what Canada could contribute?
Support the operation, work with regional allies, help with post-conflict transition to pluralism, and leverage Canada's expertise in nuclear nonproliferation and tracking proceeds of terrorism.
John Baird: Should Canada Support the Iran War?
Q: Do you have a view, first of all, on the advisability of America and Israel going to war against Iran in the first place?
The U.S. is a close ally and Israel is a close friend; I would have strongly supported the initiative, though I noted the evolution in the government's stance over the subsequent days.
