From Course Records to DNFs: Adam Kimble Talks Lessons & Strategies in Ultrarunning
Q: What surprised you most about nutrition and hydration on Cocodona?
The importance of carrying enough water and salt over multi-day stages, learning to adjust hydration strategies based on terrain and heat, and testing new approaches in practice rather than race day.
From Course Records to DNFs: Adam Kimble Talks Lessons & Strategies in Ultrarunning
Q: How do you manage caffeine during multi-day races?
Begin with a controlled caffeine plan, taper into the race, use a mix of coffee, caffeinated gels, Run Gum, and strategic timing to avoid napping out early while delaying the boost for when it's most needed.
From Course Records to DNFs: Adam Kimble Talks Lessons & Strategies in Ultrarunning
Q: What was your general strategy going into Cocodona 250?
Treat it like a dress rehearsal: start with a higher carb intake and taper later, keep a steady intake, monitor gut tolerance, and use the race as a learning opportunity for the longer distance.
COCODONA 250 MADNESS RE-RELEASE: Kilian Korth, 2025 Triple Crown Winner
Q: What was your fueling and caffeine strategy during Tahoe 200?
I consumed about 70-80 grams of carbs per hour in the first 100 miles, then reduced to around 60 grams/hour as the pace dropped. Caffeine was used aggressively: 100 mg every 3 hours during the day, every 2 hours at night, and a large dose toward the end of the race, totaling around 3,100 mg of caffeine over the 52 hours. I also used a mix of gels, liquid calories, and small amounts of solid foods from my crew.
COCODONA 250 MADNESS RE-RELEASE: Kilian Korth, 2025 Triple Crown Winner
Q: How did your nutrition evolve leading into Tahoe 200?
I moved from earlier experimentation with ketogenic-style fat metabolism to a more balanced approach, emphasizing protein (at least a gram per pound of bodyweight) and periodized carbohydrate intake, especially around heavy effort days and lift days, while keeping a stable baseline of whole foods and avoiding gluten-containing foods that cause GI issues. I also maintained high fat intake in lower-intensity days and used gels and liquid calories during races for reliable energy, reserving more solid foods for occasional comfort and crew support.
