Reviews

5.0 out of 5 stars from 4 ratings
  • Top notch podcast for pediatric dietitians

The CPNP group is possibly the best resource for dietitians in the clinical pediatric space. If not a member, consider it! This podcast is just one of the many excellent resources provided by this group and NASPGHAN. Every episode has discussions on relevant topics from true professionals in the space. I can agree with another review that there could be more diversity, however, the field of dietetics truly lacks that as a whole. Can’t recommend this enough!

  • Amazing Content! Need for Diversity

I love the content, but there is a huge need for diversity. The field of dietetics is dominated by white women. To patients, this appears as this population being the only group to deliver nutrition messages. This podcast has the ability to challenge this stereotype by having more diverse speakers.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Episode 34 - Megan Horsley - Weaning Enteral Nutrition in Patients after Complex Heart Surgery
Q: How are you assessing nutrition status in these infants with complex cardiac histories?
We use nutrition-focused physical exams, body composition tools like InBody, mid-upper arm circumference, and routine metabolic cards; edema, micronutrient markers, wound healing, and essential fatty acid signs are all monitored to guide planning, with fluid shifts tracked via body water analysis when possible.
Episode 45 - Sarah Vermilyea - Nutrition in Children with Complex Health History
Q: How do you handle planning when the patient already has a tube feeding regimen in place?
You respect existing regimens, use a comprehensive intake history, consider changes gradually, and monitor closely while balancing medical constraints and family preferences.
Episode 45 - Sarah Vermilyea - Nutrition in Children with Complex Health History
Q: How do you begin a nutrition assessment for a newly identified complex patient?
You gather the medical history, surgeries, medications, and nutrition history before meeting the family, document what has worked or not, and plan to build rapport and obtain ongoing feedback from the care team and family.
Episode 45 - Sarah Vermilyea - Nutrition in Children with Complex Health History
Q: What does it mean when we talk about children with medical complexity in practice?
It refers to kids with chronic, multi-system conditions who require subspecialty follow-up, equipment, and home health care, and who often need care from many teams; terminology varies by context, but the core is complex medical needs.
Episode 43 - Wendy Elverson - Managing Food Protein–Induced Allergic Proctocolitis (FPIAP)
Q: What is the best diagnostic approach given there is no single test for FPIP?
There is no single laboratory or endoscopic finding that definitively diagnoses FPIP. The recommended approach is to remove the suspected trigger food and reintroduce it after two to four weeks to observe whether symptoms recur, while monitoring the baby's overall well-being.
