  • Great show

Love this pod, very interesting. One presenter, John, talks in too halting a manner, but the show is always intelligent & stimulating.

  • Content far better than audio

Excellent content, but the audio in the April 28, 2002 episode with Chris keefer was terrible. Keefer’s sounded like an intercom and the host’s like he was at the bottom of mineshaft. Still, I’ve learned a ton from this show.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Perpetuating the Nuclear Lifecycle Ft. Ken Rueter (UCOR)
Q: What does UCOR actually do on a day-to-day basis in Oak Ridge?
UCOR conducts decommissioning, characterization, decontamination, demolition, and remediation of former Manhattan Project and Cold War facilities, employing a mix of remote robotic systems and human teams, with a focus on reducing environmental liability and enabling land reuse.
Perpetuating the Nuclear Lifecycle Ft. Ken Rueter (UCOR)
Q: Tell me how you ended up as president and CEO of UCOR.
Ken Rueter describes a long-form career starting as a laborer and moving through chemical engineering and environmental remediation, culminating in leading UCOR after a series of mergers and acquisitions, with the Oak Ridge cleanup contract and brownfield redevelopment at the center of his trajectory.
Energy Dominance Financing ft. Julie Kozeracki (EDF)
Q: Walk me through what a typical large-light-water reactor engagement looks like from an utilities' perspective, starting with a contract to build with Westinghouse.
The process starts with evaluating licensing groundwork and selecting the right mix of EDF tools, including partial loan coverage, sponsor credit support, and ITC pairing. Depending on how complete the design is and the sponsor's commitment, EDF may provide a project-financing style loan or a direct investment-grade loan backed by the sponsor, with risk mitigants and contingencies to cover cost overruns and construction delays.
Energy Dominance Financing ft. Julie Kozeracki (EDF)
Q: OK, when you look at a project, what are the three core questions EDF prioritizes before moving forward?
EDF focuses on whether there is a completed or near-completed design, an estimate of cost and schedule that are credible, and whether there is strong sponsor alignment and a clear plan to repay the loan. The toolkit is then tailored to fit the project's stage, from early development to near-project-financing with contingency structures and ITC pairing.
Waste Not, Want Not ft. Carl Perez (Exodys)
Q: Can you give listeners a clear picture of what waste reprocessing is and how it fits into the nuclear life cycle?
Reprocessing is the act of recuperating materials from spent fuel, not just extracting plutonium; it enables recycling of uranium and other materials back into the reactor fuel, reducing fresh uranium demand and supporting the current fleet while potentially enabling regional modular approaches.
