  • Useful insight into power markets

I’m starting out as a state government lawyer in public utility law with a focus on electricity, and the recent episodes and summer school episodes have been a useful entry point into the worlds of energy science, policy, and markets.

  • Spiritual?

Environmentalist are actually “concrete” observers. They see habitat loss and point it out. When very few others are able to recognize it, they may have words of condemnation, but they are seeing the forest, not just the trees.

You don’t have to belittle people who care about life more than you, and for longer than you, to make your point.

Are you saying Rachel Carson was too spiritual in pointing out the scientific effects of DDT?

Truth is, human animals don’t want to burn calories physically... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

There’s a New Playbook for Cutting Power Prices
Q: Can you tell us, Arjun, what is in this report? What do you think we should do? What's the playbook?
The playbook argues for strengthening government capacity across states to reduce bills while deploying clean energy, including expanding utility commissions' mandates, improving transparency, reforming siting rules, enhancing permitting processes, planning transmission more effectively, and using public finance to reduce the cost of capital and shift incentives toward public interest.
A New Theory About Why Biden’s Big Climate Law Failed
Q: So can you just start by describing your recent study and what you found?
We surveyed 5,000 people in 2024 about whether they noticed green investments and who they credited for them, linking responses to project locations. We found investments were modestly visible but not traceable to the federal level; governors and local officials were more likely to claim credit, while companies spread credit broadly and acted as nonpartisan diplomats.
Why the Iran War Is a Warning for Natural Gas
Q: How might a ten-day or five-week campaign look in terms of energy impacts?
Short-term, oil and gas markets react with spikes in prices and volatility; longer campaigns could sustain elevated prices and disrupt LNG supply, particularly if Qatar and other LNG suppliers are affected, with Europe potentially bearing higher energy costs and the US facing political and economic costs the longer the conflict persists.
Why the Iran War Is a Warning for Natural Gas
Q: Can you start by giving us a macro picture of what has happened over the past 72 hours at this point?
A significant US-Israeli military operation against Iran has targeted missiles, leadership, and strategic facilities, with Iran responding with missiles and drones toward Gulf states and bases; the overall aim appears to be degrading Iran's military capabilities while avoiding a full-scale ground invasion. The situation remains fluid as the war continues.
The Peril of Talking About Electricity Affordability
Q: What grid policy tools could realistically scale to meet future load growth beyond VPPs and demand response?
A mix of lower-cost public financing, improved long-horizon grid planning (FERC 1920), permitting reform, and new cost-allocation rules could enable larger-scale investments while sharing risk.
