Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Author Stephen Hall Dispenses Knowledge in "A Spoonful of Sugar: The Story of the Upjohn Pharmacy in Disneyland"
Q: What first sparked your interest in the Upjohn Pharmacy at Disneyland?
A volunteer internship in the History of Pharmacy Museum exposed me to a surprising Disneyland connection, which grew into a deeper archival hunt and eventually the decision to tell the full story in a book.
Walt Disney's "Fantasia" and "Worlds to Conquer" with Author J.B. Kaufman
Q: Could you elaborate on the studio's expansion into effects animation and how Fantasia allowed for this growth?
He outlines the establishment of the effects department, its distinction from character animation, and how techniques developed for water, rain, and other elements later informed segments like The Sorcerer's Apprentice.
Walt Disney's "Fantasia" and "Worlds to Conquer" with Author J.B. Kaufman
Q: How did those past analyses of Snow White and Pinocchio influence your approach to Fantasia and provide this book with its own identity?
Kaufman notes his method stayed consistent in research while acknowledging Fantasia demanded different archival access, a broader look at technique, and the integration of music and visuals.
Walt Disney's "Fantasia" and "Worlds to Conquer" with Author J.B. Kaufman
Q: And what led you to engage in such a deep dive of this project?
He explains the motivation of tracing Fantasia from its origins to its present legacy, and how the ambition of the project invites a wide historical and technical examination.
Walt Disney's "Fantasia" and "Worlds to Conquer" with Author J.B. Kaufman
Q: Likewise. Well, I think I might start with maybe the obvious question, which is, what is your connection to Fantasia? What has that looked like over the years?
Kaufman describes his lifelong engagement with Disney history and how Fantasia sits at the center of film and animation innovation, informing his book Worlds to Conquer and shaping his perspective on the studio's evolution.
