Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

News Talks: Is MRes recruitment exploiting UK international student visa rules?
Q: What are the universities saying in response to the criticisms?
Universities say they are responding to demand, emphasize immigration compliance, and defend the value and rigor of MRes programs, while acknowledging that the growth has raised questions about eligibility and the perception of the policy's spirit.
News Talks: Is MRes recruitment exploiting UK international student visa rules?
Q: So, Helen, talk us through these new figures.
The data from Hesa and FOI requests show a notable but focused rise in international MRes students at a handful of institutions, indicating a pattern rather than a sector-wide trend, and suggesting demand is driving growth within the current visa framework rather than illegality.
News Talks: Will Horizon FP10 support 'bigger, better, stronger' global collaboration?
Q: Put your cards on the table, Paul. Do you think the next Horizon Europe could be a vehicle for developing new kinds of collaboration that are bigger, better, stronger and more robust?
It won't completely revolutionize the research landscape, but it can contribute significantly, especially with the geopolitical impetus and a stronger emphasis on competitiveness. The success will depend on ironing out disagreements about association terms, dual-use policies, and ensuring inclusive participation across Europe and beyond.
News Talks: Will Horizon FP10 support 'bigger, better, stronger' global collaboration?
Q: What might this closer alignment of Horizon with European economic and defense priorities mean for future European research and its global networks?
It could steer the program toward more applied, translational research and strategic sectors, while trying to maintain some blue-sky elements. The balance between competitiveness and scientific exploration will be key, as will the role of associated countries and their influence on agenda setting.
News Talks: Will Horizon FP10 support 'bigger, better, stronger' global collaboration?
Q: Hi Paul, thanks for joining me today to talk about Horizon. Can you give us a quick whistle stop tour of how this behemoth of research funding works?
Horizon Europe runs in pillars, with Excellent Science (Pillar 1) supporting frontier research, Global Challenges and Industrial Competitiveness (Pillar 2), and the third pillar focusing on innovative Europe and spin-outs. The budget is negotiated between the Commission, Parliament, and Council, with associated countries contributing and potential dual-use and defense elements now more prominently considered. The program aims to be big, international, and highly competitive, especially for ERC-type funding.
