  • Really engaging and wide-ranging

A friend sent me an episode to check out. Despite not living in ABQ myself, I was still compelled by the stories and interviews. It’s interesting to hear hyper local perspectives juxtaposed with the daily political headlines we’re bombarded with. These guys do a good job of covering real issues without wading into partisan waters.

  • This podcast has interesting and timely topics. However, when the guest speakers phone in for the discussion, the audio quality often suffers and back ground noises interfere with the professional feel of this podcast.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Promises vs. Reality: New Mexico's Broken Child Welfare System
Q: Do you think this investigation will lead to meaningful changes if leadership changes but other structural problems remain?
The changes will only be meaningful if they are accompanied by resources, training, capacity expansion, and a reoriented leadership focus on safety first, not just reunification. A new governor alone is not enough without systemic reforms and a deliberate legislative roadmap.
New Mexico Takes On PFAS: Faster Detection & New Label Requirements
Q: How might the labeling affect high-tech manufacturing or investment in New Mexico?
Exemptions exist for locally made NM products; the rule aims to balance public health with industry needs, and the state argues that well-structured rules can actually attract responsible investment by demonstrating commitment to safety.
New Mexico Takes On PFAS: Faster Detection & New Label Requirements
Q: What are the regulatory implications of HB 212 and how will enforcement work?
Manufacturers are responsible for labeling; NM will inspect shelves, verify reporting, and enforce with penalties that fund ongoing program investments, with exemptions for products made in New Mexico.
New Mexico Takes On PFAS: Faster Detection & New Label Requirements
Q: Is this faster PFAS testing likely to be commercialized for public use?
The goal is to move toward commercialization and tech transfer, but there are still basic research steps, user-friendly design improvements, and validation across varied water conditions before public kits become available.
New Mexico Takes On PFAS: Faster Detection & New Label Requirements
Q: Can you talk to me about the process of what you were doing daily to cut down on testing time?
We iterated on adsorbent materials and the detection workflow, shifting from laborious pre-concentration to a quick pellet-based method, while ensuring accuracy and consistency before mass spectrometry, leading to a dramatic reduction in time and cost.
