  • Always Surprised

Even though I’m a lover of the game, I’m always surprised by just how much I enjoy each episode! Analyzing games is important, but chess is more than that; it’s something like a world view, a formatting of the mind. I really appreciate all things chess adjacent and this podcast satisfies that longing.

The interview with Tania Sachdev was wonderful! Her thoughts and enthusiasm are infectious!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

#94. Simen Agdestein, Live From Norway Chess!
Q: What role does Norway Chess play in promoting chess in the country?
Norway Chess serves as a focal point that brings in investors and media attention, which in turn funds training camps and tournaments, benefiting aspiring players and the chess community as a whole.
#94. Simen Agdestein, Live From Norway Chess!
Q: How do you balance public attention with teaching responsibilities?
The balance comes from leveraging publicity while ensuring the work at NTG continues to build a broad base of young players, with family support and a calm approach to pressure for the kids.
#94. Simen Agdestein, Live From Norway Chess!
Q: What are your current ambitions, Simen?
Ambitions are evolving; most previous goals have been achieved many times over, so now the focus is on personal growth like reading and curiosity, rather than chasing traditional titles alone.
#92. John Donaldson About His Latest Bobby Fischer Book!
Q: What was the most surprising archival find for you?
The discovery of extensive correspondence and score sheets in boxes that revealed missing games and pre-Interzonal materials, showing how much of Fischer's early career was preserved by his mother and later institutional custodians, which reshaped parts of the narrative.
#92. John Donaldson About His Latest Bobby Fischer Book!
Q: How did you approach annotating Fischer's older games with modern perspectives?
I used multiple versions of Stockfish to check correctness across different time spans of the manuscript, balancing respect for Fischer's original annotations with modern engine insights, and focusing on clear, stable evaluations rather than minor shifts.
