  • Great content delivered at a high level without overwhelming

This podcast provides a variety of food-as-medicine and functional medicine topics. Ali is an expert in her field really getting to the bottom of complicated issues but making it approachable. My favorite part is that beyond general information each episode has applications and recommendations on how you can change your health and reduce your risk for chronic illness!

Episode 497: Q&A Grab Bag
Q: Does coffee and honey really act like a steroid for coughs, and is there evidence behind it?
A PubMed randomized controlled trial comparing honey plus coffee to systemic steroids for persistent post-infectious cough was discussed, noting that the honey-coffee combination showed effectiveness in reducing cough frequency in the study, while highlighting caveats and considerations about caffeine and sugar intake.
Episode 497: Q&A Grab Bag
Q: What exactly is protein-sparing modified fasting and how do you structure days during the sprint?
The host outlines a protocol of high protein intake with restricted calories to promote fat burning and preserve lean mass, providing example day macros and detailing how bursts of fasting can support ketosis and metabolic health.
Episode 497: Q&A Grab Bag
Q: Is it true that sunglasses can cause more sunburn and what is your favorite clean sunscreen?
Wearing sunglasses can modulate signals related to melanin production and skin protection, but the host recommends a balanced approach with gradual sun exposure, linen clothing, and careful use of UV protection; she prefers non-nano zinc oxide sunscreens and linen over heavy chemical sunscreens.
Episode 497: Q&A Grab Bag
Q: Is it healthier to drink out of a copper water bottle?
Copper has antibacterial properties and can play several roles in the body, but high doses or improper use aren't advisable; the host emphasizes minimal copper intake from diet and cautions against overreliance on copper bottles unless needed for specific situations, while acknowledging potential benefits and limitations.
Episode 490: Ask Me Anything with Ali Miller RD
Q: Is it necessary to actively work on the microbiome if someone has normal daily bowel movements, and what signs should prompt action?
Yes, because the microbiome influences skin, mood, and GI health beyond bowel regularity; look for indicators like dermatitis, IBS symptoms, and mental health correlations; regular screening and probiotic challenges can help determine whether the microbiome is in a symbiotic state or needs targeted reset and reseeding.
