The podcast has been helpful. Just wish there was an option for people like me who want to join the community but can’t afford $40/mo.

  • Ugh

I used to really like this podcast, and I do think it is very valuable, but lately Heather has been really putting on a “voice” that feels disingenuous. Almost like she is trying to do some spoken word thing. And in the newest episode, as an example, the first 10 or so minutes were all just her reading compliments about herself. It’s unnecessary and really has been turning me off, which is unfortunate. Hoping she takes this feedback and is just more real moving forward.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

136. I’m 16. My Mom is Incapable: Still Living with the Mother Who Hurts You
Q: What advice is given about seeking therapy or external support for Tanya?
Try to find a therapist who is willing to meet Tanya where she is, avoid therapists with cliché or over mystic approaches, and consider both in-person and virtual options to ensure privacy and accessibility.
136. I’m 16. My Mom is Incapable: Still Living with the Mother Who Hurts You
Q: What should Mimi focus on to support Tanya while she is still under her mother's influence?
Continue to offer consistent love and safety, validate Tanya's experiences, and stay engaged as a reliable safe harbor, while preparing for the possibility that Tanya may need to change plans as she approaches independence.
131. Hypervigilance in Relationships: Healing After Early Childhood Trauma
Q: Hi Heather, my name is Melanie, and I really want you to use my real name should you decide to feature my story and question for the show. How do I begin to approach building meaningful connections when my past has trained me to disappear?
The host explains that Melanie's hypervigilance once protected her but now interferes with forming safe relationships. The approach is to start with one consistent environment, practice being seen in that space, and gradually increase exposure while giving herself grace. Focus on finding people who believe you, allow for imperfect moments, and learn to ask genuine, curious questions to understand others better. Reassurance comes from repeated, safe experiences rather than perfection, and the goal is to cultivate a community where she feels seen and accepted.
128. Trauma-Informed Healing Is Not Trauma-Centered Living
Q: Is it necessary for healing to confront or write to narcissistic parents directly, or can choosing distance and safety without formal confrontation be a valid and sufficient path toward rewriting one's internal narrative?
Confrontation is not required for healing, and often narcissistic parents do not possess the capacity for understanding; the focus should be on personal healing rather than seeking their approval or acknowledgment.
128. Trauma-Informed Healing Is Not Trauma-Centered Living
Q: How do you balance healing conversations about shared childhood trauma with siblings without allowing those discussions to become re-traumatizing or all-consuming?
There is a phase where sharing stories and validating each other's experiences is crucial, but it should not dominate all conversations or connections going forward.
