  • Extraordinarily Out of Touch

I stumbled on this podcast thinking “cool, a political discussion that discusses local politics”. What I actually found is a podcast furthering one political party, with a so-called “conservative” praising liberal policies. No good arguments were made or differing points of view, just disgust at conservatives while praising liberalism.

  • Unlistenable

I’m a long time subscriber of both the newsletter and the podcast, but I’m unfollowing the podcast. The audio quality is often so poor and uneven that the listener has to ride the volume knob to hear extremely low sound to turning down suddenly loud audio. Too bad, because the content is often quite good and compelling. I waited six months, hoping the sound quality would improve, but I’ve given up. You

  • Essentially Listening

This podcast is amazing if you want to cut through the white noise of national politics. If you live in Michigan and like politics you should be listening to this.

I’ve learned a lot since I started listening back in July of 2021 and I’m really looking forward to what their local election coverage looks like as 2022 heats up. I already know way more about local elections then I’d ever get from reading mlive or metro Detroit local news.

The audio quality and editing is kind of whack sometimes (w... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

MIRS Monday, January 12, 2026
Q: What was your reaction to the whisper campaign suggesting Lieutenant Governor Garlin Gilchrist should drop his gubernatorial run to run for Secretary of State?
While I haven't heard much about whisper campaigns among Republicans, I think both sides have strong candidates, and it will be interesting to see how it unfolds.
MIRS Monday, January 12, 2026
Q: Do you think Democrats were ready for the large scale opposition and scrutiny data centers would receive when they made these tax incentives a priority during the final months of their Democratic trifecta majority in Lansing during 2024?
I don't believe so at all. I think they weren't prepared for the level of pushback on data center projects, which is becoming a major issue in Michigan.
MIRS Monday, January 5, 2026
Q: Is it a paved road, or will legislators need to talk about creating more revenue generators in the near future?
Legislators will need to come back to the drawing table as electric vehicles and aging infrastructure create ongoing revenue challenges.
MIRS Monday, January 5, 2026
Q: Can you tell me more about what the road negotiations were like last year, and why were they so delicate?
Negotiations were delicate due to the need for revenue increases and budget cuts in a split government atmosphere, with many challenges to get consensus on tax increases.
MIRS Monday, January 5, 2026
Q: So what should Michiganders know about the cost to drive in 2026, especially when people see that 50 plus cent gas tax number?
Drivers typically won't see a huge increase; they may see a few cents here or there depending on the price of gas at that moment.
