  • Extraordinarily Out of Touch

I stumbled on this podcast thinking “cool, a political discussion that discusses local politics”. What I actually found is a podcast furthering one political party, with a so-called “conservative” praising liberal policies. No good arguments were made or differing points of view, just disgust at conservatives while praising liberalism.

  • Unlistenable

I’m a long time subscriber of both the newsletter and the podcast, but I’m unfollowing the podcast. The audio quality is often so poor and uneven that the listener has to ride the volume knob to hear extremely low sound to turning down suddenly loud audio. Too bad, because the content is often quite good and compelling. I waited six months, hoping the sound quality would improve, but I’ve given up. You

  • Essentially Listening

This podcast is amazing if you want to cut through the white noise of national politics. If you live in Michigan and like politics you should be listening to this.

I’ve learned a lot since I started listening back in July of 2021 and I’m really looking forward to what their local election coverage looks like as 2022 heats up. I already know way more about local elections then I’d ever get from reading mlive or metro Detroit local news.

The audio quality and editing is kind of whack sometimes (w... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

MIRS Monday, July 27, 2026
Q: What do you think is driving the expected shift among senior voters in Michigan this cycle?
The guest and hosts suggest that concerns about economy, cost of living, and a desire for new political solutions are pushing many seniors toward more progressive or reform-oriented candidates, depending on the race and nominee, with a notable segment of conservatives among older voters still loyal to traditional values and Republican candidates.
MIRS Monday, July 6, 2026
Q: Representative Farhat, what do you make of the fact that we didn't get property tax cuts done or hospital reform today?
Farhat suggests the process was broken and that big-ticket items were sidelined by an election-driven urgency, leading to a focus on smaller, more immediate policy actions and budget stability.

Q: What are your thoughts on how the media covers dramatic political moments, such as presidential race developments or security incidents?
Costa shares that the media must balance urgency with accuracy, and that events like mass shootings or security incidents are deeply informative about political culture and the responsibilities of journalists in keeping the public informed without sensationalism.
MIRS Monday, May 4, 2026
Q: How do you view Michigan's role in national politics given its purple status and key races?
Costa notes Michigan as a microcosm where national forces collide with local dynamics, highlighting candidates like Whitmer, Slotkin, Duggan, and others, and suggesting outcomes could signal broader national trends in 2026 and 2028.
MIRS Monday, May 4, 2026
Q: Robert, what keeps you up at night when you think about how political dialogue has evolved in the U.S.?
Costa emphasizes the erosion of civil discourse and the risk that violence and online polarization pose to democratic norms, stressing the importance of restoring a functional civic language and healthy dialogue across lines.
