Mattie on the Homefront is a podcast about a father and a son discovering their family. After finding wartime letters from my great-grandmother to my grandfather, I get to read them aloud to my dad, bringing together four generations of our family, week-by-week, in an almost daily look at life in the Twin Cities during WWII.

Plus, Mattie is listening to a lot of radio, and narrowly avoiding teenagers, but she cannot get out of her new obligation as it lo... more
In our longest ever letter (but not episode!), we have a bombshell of a revelation about Mattie's son Wes, and his wife Florence. Mattie is way in her feelings, and leaning on her faith to get through.

What a gem of a podcast! Love hearing these memories told in an informal format..Makes me feel like I’m sitting across the table listening with a piece of coffee cake and a steaming cup of coffee! I am only on the third episode and can’t wait for more! Thanks for an emotional respite from the pressures of current events. Gives me great perspective to hear how elders lived through challenging times.
Really enjoying this podcast. Love the interaction between the hosts! What a gift to have found these letters, thank you for sharing them!
Interesting concept… but no storytelling continuity… too much miscellaneous chatter!
I went to college in the twin cities. It has a special place in my heart. I love this podcast it gives you a very personal look at what war time look liked for the average person at that time. Thanks for sharing you family with us. The new episodes are a favorite part of my week. Thanks!
Listening to this has made me think of my family members no longer with us and the fond (mostly) that I have of growing up. I wish that my father was still alive so that I could have a podcast with him. He was a great storyteller.
Enjoy each other. And the show is great. I ❤️ Mattie.

A multi-generational read-aloud series that centers on wartime letters from a matriarch to her son, situated against the Twin Cities home front during World War II. Each episode threads intimate family moments—daily chores, holidays, and personal tensions—with broader historical context like rationing, war production, and local community life. The format is conversational and archival, offering vivid, sensory details from letters and photos while situating them in a wider narrative of resilience and memory. Notable is the strong emphasis on four-generation storytelling, with hosts guiding readers through personal memories and historical context in a warm, accessible way that can appeal to history buffs, genealogists, and listeners seeking h... more
