  • Awesome Podcast for Movie Fans!

This has become one of my favorite "go-to" podcasts. Craig and Alan have a love of movies that comes across. But they go well beyond just gushing over movies, they provide smart insight that makes me look at the movie in a new way. One of the biggest compliments I can give is that I find myself making it a point to watch a movie I haven't seen before listening to them talk about it and also find myself wanting to re-watch movies I have with new eyes after listening to an episode.

  • We need HEROES!

Craig and Alan are knocking it out of the park with this podcast! In these days of cynicism and poitical turmoil, it's fun to relax and hear two knowledgeable guys just being enthuiastic about our onscreen heroes. The first few episodes have gone from John Wayne to Edgar Rice Burroughs to the glory days of Hong Kong action cinema. They don't need my advice, but I'm looking forward to discussions of Toshiro Mifune's Yojimbo character, Tarzan, Sherlock Holmes (that could be a month of podcasts in ... more

  • I Still Believe in Heroes

Craig and Alan have had an easy chemistry on their pervious cooperative podcast episodes, and put it to great use here in a time where we could use as many aspirational heroes as we can get. The duo have a great enthusiasm for the films they cover (from bone fide classics to underrated gems) as well as neat touches like "what-if?" recasting and tastes of upcoming shows. Coming in at the magic 1-hour mark, each episode is a quick, tasty morsel of matinee goodness.

  • Five stars!

Alan & Craig are having so much fun that it's infectious. Listening to Matinee Heroes is like talking with your friends about the movies you love. In these cynical days it's rare to find people who aren't afraid to just LIKE things. I'll never miss an episode.

  • A great podcast for movie buffs

So far, I've only gotten to hear the "John Carter" episode of the show. Alan and Craig discuss what they view as the flaws of the movie, but they also detail what they love about it as well. I think they are fair about their feelings on this movie. They never say it's great, but simply underrated and that more people should consider giving it a chance and explain why they feel that way. I can tell it's going to be a podcast I'll listen to frequently.

If you make sense out of your life through the cinema (like I do) (or even if you don't)), this podcast is for you! Craig and Alan do a great job delving deeper into the complexities of characters, themes, and applying them to life. I can't wait for the next one to come out!

  • A true fan's perspective

I've read Alan's writing and reviews for awhile now so it is great to put a voice and personality to the written work I've come to enjoy. Craig is new to me, but his talent on the podcast was clear from the word go. Their interaction on the podcast is excellent. The podcast is brief and succinct enough to not be drawn out, but in depth enough to get to a movie lovers core. It sounds like how I talk to my fellow movie geek friends about movies, and that is exactly what I want to hear.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

David Anders – May 2015 – CONversations with Craig
Q: What was your favorite audition?
He didn't want to do Children of the Corn and preferred a different project, but ultimately landed roles that pushed him toward diverse genres; he credits smart scripts and opportunities that allowed him to showcase range.
The Third Man
Q: Elisabeth, how does Vienna as a setting contribute to the film's tone and themes?
Vienna is almost another character—a post-war ruin pulsing with black market economies and shifting powers—providing a haunting backdrop that amplifies the sense of existential crisis and moral ambiguity central to the story.
The Third Man
Q: Derek, what makes The Third Man stand out as a noir classic beyond its famous moments?
Its combination of atmosphere, moral complexity, and Holly Martins's almost anti-detective approach creates a mood where truth is fragile and loyalty is unreliable, which makes the film feel timeless and morally provocative.
Kevin Conroy – June 2018 – CONversations with Craig
Q: What's the difference between theater and television acting and voice acting for you?
He explains a threefold division: TV is a writer's genre, film is a director's, and theater is the actor's; voice acting uniquely combines live interaction in a booth with the need to sustain a character for hours at a time, often in isolation, which demands different craft and discipline.
Kevin Conroy – June 2018 – CONversations with Craig
Q: What was your favorite movie that you voice acted in, and what was your favorite Arkham game?
His favorite movie is Mask of the Phantasm due to its deep dive into the character's childhood and romance, while his proudest moment in gaming is the ending of Arkham Knight for its challenging portrayal of Batman's darkest place and rigorous recording process.
