Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

42 Samantha's Story
Q: Tell us what kicked off your awareness of the gambling issue in your family.
It started when my husband admitted to losing all of the money in our brokerage account through day trading, which I initially misread as a midlife crisis. Over time, I learned that this was a form of gambling addiction driven by the day trading environment and neurodivergent factors, not just a simple financial mistake.
20 Listeners Questions 1
Q: What common behaviors signal that a gambler has a problem?
Lying, avoidance of transparency, questioning or misdirecting questions, and mood swings that seem tied to gambling outcomes are common signals. Over time, you notice decreased attention to daily functioning and a noticeable absence of ritual or presence.
24 Diane's Story
Q: I would love, though, Diane, if you could tell us why you stayed.
Diane explains that early in the crisis she stayed due to a combination of fear, responsibility, and witnessing a genuine change in her husband's willingness to engage with treatment and recovery; she also emphasizes the importance of community supports and personal boundaries as anchors that allowed her to endure and build a new form of relationship rooted in recovery.
35 Trust The Process: Jody Bechtold and Robin Witt of The Better Institute
Q: How do you manage expectations around relapse?
Set realistic expectations that relapse can occur and plan for it without giving the gambler a hall pass, focusing on ongoing engagement and boundary enforcement.
35 Trust The Process: Jody Bechtold and Robin Witt of The Better Institute
Q: Tell us about how you approach involving family in treatment.
We treat the family system, not just the gambler, and often bring family members into the process early so they can receive support and learn how best to participate in recovery.
