  • Dr Barabasi Nutritional dark matter and the Human food genome

This was an incredibly informative podcast and I absolutely love the concept of network medicine. I believe that the new era of metabolic reprogramming will depend on our ability to unlock the signals of our networks and in particular the master network control house of our hypothalamus. Likewise if we can achieve Dr. Barabasi’s two moonshots and decode nutritional dark matter to catapult food as medicine we will take charge of the epigenetic levers of health, disease risk and aging. • Love it - but audio needs help

I’ve been listening to this podcast for years and really enjoy the deep dives into a wide range of health topics. The audio quality could really use some help though. I had to stop listening to the Layne Norton episode because parts of what he was saying would constantly fade in and out. I was hoping turning up the volume would solve it, but it just made the problem more apparent. I will keep trying to listen - I’ve noticed not every episode has issues, but some definitely do. Thank you!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Age Faster or Slower? The Surprising Role of Mental Health and Self-Control
Q: What is the pace of aging and how does it differ from chronological age?
The pace of aging is a biomarker that summarizes how quickly an individual's physiological systems decline over time, derived from 19 biomarkers and expressed as a personal slope; it can reveal aging trajectories even when chronological age is the same across people.
Why Most Longevity Advice Gets Weight and Exercise Wrong
Q: What is the magnitude of the effect of weight cycling on longevity in humans, and how does that compare to more stable weight maintenance?
The guest explains that weight cycling appears to have a complex, not clearly superior or inferior effect in humans; some data suggest negative health impacts, but the strongest trend is that sustained weight maintenance via certain medical interventions (like bariatric surgery or GLP-1 agonists) can lead to better outcomes, while lifestyle-driven weight loss followed by regain often results in less favorable long-term maintenance.
Can Psychedelic Mushrooms Slow Aging?
Q: Can you walk us through your scientific journey and how your work in pulmonary fibrosis and tissue repair led to the broader question about aging?
My background in training started from my undergraduate research in repair and regeneration, leading me to focus on age-related diseases and understanding what goes awry in the context of injury repair and aging.
Engineering Healthspan with Dr. Nathan Price: Is It Finally Possible?
Q: What one daily habit has an outsized impact on long-term health?
Regular sauna use, which is associated with significant reductions in various health risks.
Engineering Healthspan with Dr. Nathan Price: Is It Finally Possible?
Q: What one longevity trend are you skeptical about?
I don't think the data around cold plunges is as strong as it is for other practices like sauna use.
