  • Dr Barabasi Nutritional dark matter and the Human food genome

This was an incredibly informative podcast and I absolutely love the concept of network medicine. I believe that the new era of metabolic reprogramming will depend on our ability to unlock the signals of our networks and in particular the master network control house of our hypothalamus. Likewise if we can achieve Dr. Barabasi’s two moonshots and decode nutritional dark matter to catapult food as medicine we will take charge of the epigenetic levers of health, disease risk and aging. Thanks for ... more

  • Love it - but audio needs help

I’ve been listening to this podcast for years and really enjoy the deep dives into a wide range of health topics. The audio quality could really use some help though. I had to stop listening to the Layne Norton episode because parts of what he was saying would constantly fade in and out. I was hoping turning up the volume would solve it, but it just made the problem more apparent. I will keep trying to listen - I’ve noticed not every episode has issues, but some definitely do. Thank you!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Born to Live Longer? Inside the Genetics and Biology of Centenarians
Q: Why is there no single 'longevity gene' and what does that imply for therapies?
Because aging and longevity arise from many interacting biological pathways, therapies will likely target networks or pathways rather than a lone gene, enabling multiple routes to healthy aging.
Do Longevity Supplements Really Work?
Q: What is your approach to selecting and using supplements in clinical practice?
Prescribe only when there is clear mechanism and human evidence, measure baseline vitamin/mineral status, use targeted, personalized supplementation, and consider randomized trials; avoid one-size-fits-all recommendations.
Do Longevity Supplements Really Work?
Q: What does the evidence say about the effect of multivitamins and minerals on healthspan and aging outcomes in humans?
The evidence is mixed: some small benefits for global cognition and certain conditions exist, but overall for healthy individuals the benefit is modest or absent, and there is no clear survival advantage; benefits are more likely in people with dietary gaps or specific health issues.
Age Faster or Slower? The Surprising Role of Mental Health and Self-Control
Q: What is the pace of aging and how does it differ from chronological age?
The pace of aging is a biomarker that summarizes how quickly an individual's physiological systems decline over time, derived from 19 biomarkers and expressed as a personal slope; it can reveal aging trajectories even when chronological age is the same across people.
Why Most Longevity Advice Gets Weight and Exercise Wrong
Q: What is the magnitude of the effect of weight cycling on longevity in humans, and how does that compare to more stable weight maintenance?
The guest explains that weight cycling appears to have a complex, not clearly superior or inferior effect in humans; some data suggest negative health impacts, but the strongest trend is that sustained weight maintenance via certain medical interventions (like bariatric surgery or GLP-1 agonists) can lead to better outcomes, while lifestyle-driven weight loss followed by regain often results in less favorable long-term maintenance.
