Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Lolo Ndlovu, From Depression To Sneaker Empire
Q: What was the turning point that convinced you to scale?
Two early customer interactions—one with a notable athlete and a mother—proved the service's real value beyond niche sneaker culture, pushing me to scale from a single shop to multiple stores and formalize operations.
Lolo Ndlovu, From Depression To Sneaker Empire
Q: Was Sneaker Shack your first business?
No, Sneaker Shack started as a university project about disrupting traditional laundry and sneaker care. After returning home from Switzerland and grappling with depression, I decided to pursue it full-time, started in a small space, and gradually scaled up as demand grew.
Lolo Ndlovu, From Depression To Sneaker Empire
Q: Where did you grow up, and what shaped you?
I grew up in Tongapo, spent early years in Tainin and Mabuneng, then moved to Hazy View before settling in Johannesburg. Losing my mother early and having a father who stayed as a strong anchor shaped my resilience and opinions on family, responsibility, and the drive to build something of my own.
Maria McCloy, Never Just One Thing Ever
Q: Would you say that because your influences were from outside of South Africa, it gave you a different lens when it came to music and culture?
Maria describes how growing up with Pan-African influences and a mixed family background gave her and her collaborators a broader, continental perspective, which informed their approach to culture and media, helping them see beyond local scenes to a broader African context.
Brian Baloyi, The Keeper of Legacies Beyond Football
Q: Was goalkeeper always your thing?
I didn't love goalie from day one; I started focusing on it around 12, and a coach in Alex identified my potential, which set me on the path to professional football and beyond.
