  • Fun and interesting!

I genuinely love and value the education that I’m learning in this podcast! Fortunately I have not suffered with concussions or their symptoms, but know many people who have and am excited to share this tool with them! I also feel prepared now in the sense that I have gained a background in knowing how to proceed if my children experience a concussion as they enter into sports. Thank you!

Hearing Loss, Tinnitus, & Hyperacusis: Treat Your Hearing, Protect Your Brain with Dr. Keith Darrow | E55
Q: How do you diagnose and tailor treatment for hearing loss when someone has background noise challenges or a history of concussion?
We use an extended battery of seven tests, including speech-in-noise testing and FDA-cleared cognitive screening, to establish a baseline and personalize prescription hearing aid fitting, with emphasis on brain processing and cognitive health alongside hearing clarity.
Hearing Loss, Tinnitus, & Hyperacusis: Treat Your Hearing, Protect Your Brain with Dr. Keith Darrow | E55
Q: What is the difference between prescription hearing aids and over-the-counter (OTC) hearing aids, and why does it matter for outcomes?
OTC devices increase accessibility but currently lack consistent, peer-reviewed evidence showing they match prescription-grade devices in delivering medical benefits like reduced tinnitus, cognitive protection, and fall risk reduction; prescription devices remain the standard for comprehensive hearing healthcare.
Concussion Rehab with Creator of the Brain Tool Kit App - Melissa Biscardi | E33
Q: What are the main eye movement issues you see that are often missed by standard tests?
Issues include subtle pursuits and vertical angle discongruencies, saccade accuracy and latency, and asymmetries in eye movements that affect everyday tasks like reading and balance, which standard tests may not capture.
Concussion Rehab with Creator of the Brain Tool Kit App - Melissa Biscardi | E33
Q: What does the VR ocular motor rehab protocol look like, and who is it for?
The protocol involves six weeks of VR-based eye movement training with tasks like pursuing dots, saccades, and anti-saccades, followed by home-based reinforcement on an app; it targets people 30 days to a year post-injury and aims to improve engagement and accessibility when in-clinic visits are limited.
Concussion Rehab with Creator of the Brain Tool Kit App - Melissa Biscardi | E33
Q: Can you explain how you decide when to start manual therapy in a concussion patient?
I assess the patient's autonomic state and signs of readiness, starting with gentle, non-invasive manual work to ease the system and gradually progress to more active rehab as the nervous system shows safety cues like deeper breathing and reduced tension.
