  • Fun and interesting!

I genuinely love and value the education that I’m learning in this podcast! Fortunately I have not suffered with concussions or their symptoms, but know many people who have and am excited to share this tool with them! I also feel prepared now in the sense that I have gained a background in knowing how to proceed if my children experience a concussion as they enter into sports. Thank you!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

More Than Meets the Eye: Troubleshooting Visual Symptoms After Concussion with Dr. Paul Brewer | E21
Q: What is the difference between peripheral vision processing and central vision processing, and how does concussive injury affect each?
Peripheral processing can be constricted or impaired, influencing gaze stability and the brain's ability to filter information. Central processing governs focus and fine motor control of eye movements. After concussion, both can be compromised, and improving peripheral processing through targeted integration can help restore central processing and reduce symptoms like motion sensitivity.
More Than Meets the Eye: Troubleshooting Visual Symptoms After Concussion with Dr. Paul Brewer | E21
Q: Can you maybe talk about the difference between visual acuity and eye movements, and why eye movement disorders are often missed on standard exams?
Visual acuity measures clarity of central vision, but many patients have normal acuity yet poor eye movements (tracking, convergence, saccades) that disrupt function. A comprehensive exam should test gaze stability, eye focusing, and binocular coordination, not just acuity. This helps identify issues that standard eye tests can miss.
Navigating Exercise Intolerance After Concussion with Dr. Mike T Nelson | E22
Q: Do you find a benefit to emphasizing isometric contractions versus other types of therapy?
Yes. Isometrics can be highly beneficial when patients are severely intolerant, helping to expose the nervous system to the position with minimal heart-rate increase, and then progressively reintroduce movement with less risk of triggering symptoms.
The Forgotten 30%: Navigating Life with Persistent Post-Concussion Symptoms | E24
Q: What has been most challenging about accessing standardized concussion care, and how are you addressing those gaps?
She discusses the variance in treatment pathways, the lack of a centralized PPCS program, and her work educating practitioners through workshops and an online community to align care with patient needs.
The Forgotten 30%: Navigating Life with Persistent Post-Concussion Symptoms | E24
Q: Can you describe the immediate and evolving symptoms you experienced after your head injury?
Chaandani explains that early symptoms included difficulty with conversation, word-finding challenges, brain fog, memory problems, and sensory sensitivities, which then evolved over time into broader functional impairments that affected daily life.
