Mothers are tired of anti-mother misogyny, household labor inequality, and a culture that expects mothers to bear the burdens of its many shortcomings--all without complaint. Mothers are vital to feminism, and have been neglected in feminist discourse for far too long. Mothers are constantly told that political problems are personal--that if we communicate better, mother better, behave better, thi... more

  • Engaging and though-provoking

Thank you for this excellent resource! Once I became a mother, I definitely felt the effects of feminism that was designed to get us access to the public spaces and jobs where we could compete on equal footing with men. And we have done that, with the wages of unmarried women and men being closer than ever. But once you have kids that pay difference goes off the cliff and you discover that the whole “we can have it all” is propaganda or cheerleading and not a reflection of reality. Children ... more

  • Fantastically informative

As a lifelong feminist, but not one who ever studied feminist theory in a serious way, I’ve learned so much from the different speakers Zawn invites to the show. They bring experience and expertise to the nuanced and fantastically informative conversations. I will note that I don’t enjoy the episodes she has with her husband quite as much. I do find it jarring to hear a male voice talking about women’s issues but I can see how it would helpful for others to be able to witness a healthy relations... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

S3 Ep8: Soraya Chemaly: Male Supremacy
Q: I have a number of questions about schools and gender bias. Can you talk a little bit about how schools contribute to inequality and how our social institutions propagate it, not just individual actions?
Chemaly describes a two-tiered education system, male privilege in access and status, and how volunteering in schools often reinforces women's unpaid labor while excluding working mothers.
S3 Ep8: Soraya Chemaly: Male Supremacy
Q: So tell me, this book is a little bit different from your other books because your other books were more theory-oriented. This is really punchy and to-the-point and heavy on statistics. Tell me how you decided to write this book and what you hope it accomplishes.
Chemaly explains she aimed for conciseness and practical focus on male supremacy, tying it to broader social systems and backlashes, to make the argument accessible and actionable.
S3 Ep5: Loretta Ross: Calling In, Building Sustainable Activism, and Changing Minds
Q: How do you maintain a sense of hope in the face of all the horrors that have been going on for so long?
Maintaining hope involves understanding the broader context of struggles and not allowing despair to dominate your perspectives. It's important to nurture the chain of freedom and engage with the joy of advocacy.
S3 Ep5: Loretta Ross: Calling In, Building Sustainable Activism, and Changing Minds
Q: What is toxic callout culture, and what does it mean to call someone in as an alternative?
Toxic callout culture involves holding someone accountable for harm through shaming and blaming, often publicly. It lacks an opportunity for growth. Calling in offers a way to engage with individuals to promote understanding and healing instead of shame.
S3 Ep6: Emma Katz: Why Abusive Men Are Not Good Parents (re-release)
Q: Is it better for him to stay and to expose them to his constant abuse, or is it better for me to leave and expose them to part-time abuse, but with no protection from me?
The expert suggests starting with a risk assessment and considering the children's ages and the nature of the dangers they would face alone with him. There's value in having at least part-time stability if managed correctly.
