Mothers are tired of anti-mother misogyny, household labor inequality, and a culture that expects mothers to bear the burdens of its many shortcomings--all without complaint. Mothers are vital to feminism, and have been neglected in feminist discourse for far too long. Mothers are constantly told that political problems are personal--that if we communicate better, mother better, behave better, thi... more

LC DeShay is a reproductive justice sociologist, as well as a doula and lactation consultant who has worked on the front lines of women and children’s health. I brought them on as a witness, as someone who has seen what we do to women at their most v... more
Violence and abuse are normalized in every aspect of our culture, and particularly in parenting. No wonder so many women tell me they didn’t recognize abuse until it was too late.

This month, I’ve been inundated with messages from folks who love the new pace of podcasts—weekly instead of every other week. I love making the podcast and love giving you what you want, but the podcast is a ton of work, and it underperforms in the ... more
I’ve been thinking a lot lately about what it means to be a public intellectual who also happens to be a woman. The constant criticism feels like a crushing weight that no amount of therapy, resilience, or blocking can render manageable.

As a lifelong feminist, but not one who ever studied feminist theory in a serious way, I’ve learned so much from the different speakers Zawn invites to the show. They bring experience and expertise to the nuanced and fantastically informative conversations. I will note that I don’t enjoy the episodes she has with her husband quite as much. I do find it jarring to hear a male voice talking about women’s issues but I can see how it would helpful for others to be able to witness a healthy relations... more
This podcast is completely transforming the way I understand the world around me. Each episode reveals another layer of how deeply patriarchy shapes our everyday lives and it blows my mind just how many things I’ve never even considered before. Zawn and Jeff’s words are intelligent, kind, honest and backed by truckloads of research. I finish every episode feeling both challenged and awestruck, like I’m finally seeing the sky’s true colour for the first time.
My mothering days are long past, but I wish I’d had this podcast when I had young kids. Back when traditional family values was the reign of terror du jour, interrogating women at work who were mothers on their choice was a regular unpleasantry. Besides stomach pains, I remember having panic attacks thinking my kids would grow up to be school shooters because I had a job. And the episode that referenced breastfeeding—yes to telling women the truth of... more
Zawn Villines is a feminist giant in the 21st century. Her articles on Substack has planted seeds of me having a womanist awakening. I grew a voice and most importantly gained knowledge. Her podcasts with various amazing feminists and her husband are needed for our current culture and society at large. They address the daily inequities in marriages and how much harm women face in them. Such harm (household labor inequity, sexual correction, parental labor disparities, etc) that’s been repackaged... more
I keep coming back to older episodes because they’re just so good.
