Mothers are tired of anti-mother misogyny, household labor inequality, and a culture that expects mothers to bear the burdens of its many shortcomings--all without complaint. Mothers are vital to feminism, and have been neglected in feminist discourse for far too long. Mothers are constantly told that political problems are personal--that if we communicate better, mother better, behave better, thi... more

  • Engaging and though-provoking

Thank you for this excellent resource! Once I became a mother, I definitely felt the effects of feminism that was designed to get us access to the public spaces and jobs where we could compete on equal footing with men. And we have done that, with the wages of unmarried women and men being closer than ever. But once you have kids that pay difference goes off the cliff and you discover that the whole “we can have it all” is propaganda or cheerleading and not a reflection of reality. Children ... more

  • Fantastically informative

As a lifelong feminist, but not one who ever studied feminist theory in a serious way, I’ve learned so much from the different speakers Zawn invites to the show. They bring experience and expertise to the nuanced and fantastically informative conversations. I will note that I don’t enjoy the episodes she has with her husband quite as much. I do find it jarring to hear a male voice talking about women’s issues but I can see how it would helpful for others to be able to witness a healthy relations... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

S3 Ep11: Cordelia Fine: Debunking Sex Difference Myths
Q: Before we get into why this exists, how it exists, and how we counter it, tell me a little bit about how you got into this line of research.
Cordelia Fine explains that she wandered into gender and neuroscience while working on a neuroethics project and raising young children, noticing how popular books misrepresented brain differences and how those misrepresentations were promoted in everyday settings. Her path led to a broader critique of how science is used to reinforce gender stereotypes, eventually shaping her books and academic work.
S3 Ep9: Jennie Young: Dating More Safely in a Patriarchy
Q: How does the book address the resistance women face when they implement Burn Haystack principles?
The book acknowledges backlash, including anger from men and “death threats” anticipated by the publisher, but emphasizes staying firm and not watering down the message to protect women and children.
S3 Ep9: Jennie Young: Dating More Safely in a Patriarchy
Q: What are some recurring red flags people should watch for in dating bios or prompts?
Directives embedded in prompts or bios—like expectations about being fit for adventure or other control signals—often predict future red flags; even seemingly small cues can indicate patterns of control that escalate.
S3 Ep9: Jennie Young: Dating More Safely in a Patriarchy
Q: How did Burn Haystack originate and what is the core idea behind the method?
It began as an academic project born from frustration with dating apps; the core idea is to use rhetoric and critical analysis to identify red flags early and to build a community that supports women in making safer dating choices.
S3 Ep10: TJ Raphael: Coercive Adoption, Liberty Lost, and Who Gets to Be a Mother
Q: Can you explain why this isn't just about historical coercion but an ongoing problem?
Coercive dynamics persist because many facilities operate with a combination of religious ideology, financial incentives, and limited access to social services, creating an environment where separation from the child is framed as redemption and the default option, even for those who resist.
