  • Dr P

Did I seriously just hear your podcast platform Uta Frith as she denied the existence of masking, laughed at people who question a deficit model, and say scientists should be less compassionate? I’ve always been a fan of yours, Dr Fisher, but that episode—and your constant agreement with her as she spoke—was incredibly disappointing.

  • A welcome addition

Thank you, a long overdue space for broad discussions from a wide variety of perspectives on current issues and challenges in this field. Balance and respectful discussion is much needed to ensure we are getting things right for children who are struggling.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Blaming children's brains for the failings of the school system with Chris Bagley
Q: Could you tell us a bit about your journey into educational psychology and the work you do now?
Chris describes his shift from teaching to educational psychology, the challenges of rigid school systems, and his work with States of Mind to develop more humane, participatory approaches to mental health and education, including democratic schooling and non-pathologizing support.
Supporting children without the need for a diagnosis with Claire Mason
Q: Could you describe for the listeners what you mean by a whole systems approach and how it works across health, education, and social care?
We define a whole system approach as needs-led practice across health, education, and social care, ensuring that no single sector creates barriers; everyone collaborates to support the young person through pragmatic, cross-agency coordination.
Why we need to be brave and ask the difficult questions with Naomi Fisher
Q: Could you explain how EMDR fits into your work with autistic individuals?
EMDR is a trauma-focused therapy that integrates bilateral stimulation with recall of distressing memories, and it can be adapted for autistic people, including those who are minimally verbal, making it a flexible option within a broader toolkit.
Evidence-based early intervention in autism with Jonathan Green
Q: How does the video-feedback therapy work in practice?
Therapists watch videos of parent-child interactions with the parent and guide a mutual exploration to help the parent recognize the child's communicative cues, leading to more attuned and responsive parenting.
Evidence-based early intervention in autism with Jonathan Green
Q: Could you explain the idea of autism being emergent and transactional?
Autism emerges from a complex interplay of genetic predispositions and environmental interactions; the environment and the child influence each other bidirectionally, so changing the environment can shift the developmental trajectory.
