Ask Me Anything: Tantrums, Sibling Conflict, Co-Parenting, and Staying Calm – 400
Q: Hi Pam, Rachel again. I overhear my daughter's phone calls and get triggered, sometimes responding with snarky texts. How can I shift to curiosity and reduce tension while staying connected with her about her life?
Pause and notice bodily sensations, name the emotions, and explore whether this fear comes from your adult self or a younger version of you. Be curious about her world, ask what she likes about the person she talks to, and avoid judgment. Once regulated, address concerns in a calm, non-accusatory way, and try to understand the context before reacting.
Ask Me Anything: Tantrums, Sibling Conflict, Co-Parenting, and Staying Calm – 400
Q: Hey Pam, Danielle here. I feel like life with my kids is whack-a-mole—everything urgent and overlapping. How do I manage one-on-one time, the 6th grade transition, ADHD assessments, and other priorities without burning out?
Recognize that urgency is a nervous-system state, not a time-management problem. Start by regulating yourself, then use discernment to identify what matters most. Write everything down to clear mental load, categorize what needs action now versus what can wait, delegate where possible, and implement age-appropriate tasks for older kids to share responsibilities.
Ask Me Anything: Tantrums, Sibling Conflict, Co-Parenting, and Staying Calm – 400
Q: Hi, my name is Karen, and I have a five-year-old son who is having some temper issues. Sometimes when I ask him to do something, he says no, and there's a little bit of an argument but he may eventually give in. But if it's something he really wants, like being on a device, he will be defiant and not listen to me, and sometimes he will call me names. How can I help him regulate his emotions better and avoid tantrums?
Approach the situation by focusing on building capacity rather than fixing behavior. regulate your own nervous system first to provide calm that co-regulates him. Get eye level, slow your voice, and use fewer words; set boundaries on devices ahead of time and follow through with consistency. Teach about what happens in the body when mad, practice small-frustration strategies, and increase one-on-one time to boost connection so he cooperates more easily over time.
Kids Today: Why Every Generation Thinks They’re Getting Worse (And Why They’re Wrong) – 351
Q: How do you feel about the control we have over how children turn out?
The best that we can hope for in a lot of ways is a good amount of influence over their lives.
Kids Today: Why Every Generation Thinks They’re Getting Worse (And Why They’re Wrong) – 351
Q: Why did you choose the word 'good' in your book title?
I want them to be happy, grounded, confident, and comfortable enough in their skin to be able to figure out anything they need to.
