Wedding Photography and Music: Creative Transitions with Benny Chiu
Q: If your photography style were a genre of music, what would it be and why?
He suggests a classical side for weddings—emphasizing emotion and motion—while also acknowledging a modern twist in capturing authentic, in-the-moment dancing, which resembles a fusion of classical foundation with contemporary expression.
Wedding Photography and Music: Creative Transitions with Benny Chiu
Q: Do you think your background in music influences how you connect with clients and peers in photography?
Yes, the discipline of working in an orchestra—where you must synchronize with others—translates into how he coordinates with second shooters, videographers, and planners to achieve a cohesive, musical flow on a wedding day.
The Tempo of the Trenches - Jason Kelce’s Symphony of Sport
Q: You said on your podcast that playing an instrument helped you excel in sports. What's one lesson you learned from playing the sax?
Practice. Nothing will reinforce how important and how beneficial practicing something is in a musical instrument, especially when you're starting from scratch and cannot even produce a clean sound; over time, with consistent practice, tempo and muscle memory build, translating to disciplined, slow-down-and-master-your-footwork on the field.
Balancing the Beat & Photography with Ash
Q: What was a defining moment that changed how you see music through photography?
Two moments: Udance college event where he predicted key moments in the Rockets' performance, and a powerful open mic session with intimate, raw moments that reshaped his approach to documenting music.
Balancing the Beat & Photography with Ash
Q: What advice would you give a photographer who isn't emotionally connected to the music they're shooting?
Study the artist visuals, build a shot list, and try to align the photography with the artist's branding while still bringing personal photographic insight to the table.
