Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

You’re doing too much. Stay out of there!
Q: What advice do you have for forging Damascus by hand without hydraulic presses?
Work smaller billets, focus on staying slow and deliberate, ensure each weld is solid, and restack carefully to maintain a diffusion-weld bond as you forge weld.
Losing It
Q: On kitchen knife handles, should the go-to be pins and epoxy or mechanical fasteners?
Mechanical fastenings like Corby bolts are favored as they provide better security compared to pins, especially when working with materials that shrink or expand, like wood.
Losing It
Q: Will steel always be the dominant material for knife making or will we start to see other materials like tungsten carbide start to make more traction?
JJ. Jones seems to think that other materials like tungsten carbide may become more prominent, but high hardness often comes with increased brittleness, which may not suit all knife applications.
Superbowl Hyperbole
Q: Is epoxy only an option or is that a bad idea?
Using just epoxy on a full tang knife is sketchy, and it's better to use mechanical fasteners for added security.
The Emotional Plumbers
Q: Is there anything you do in your process that is completely ass backwards slash opposite of how most knife makers do things?
I think there are different methods that makers use, but as long as it works for you, that's what matters. Everyone has their own way of doing things.
