  • A glaring omission

Just finished listening to Episode 29: What’s the Point of Protest (recorded early July 2024) and I was surprised that our “brave” academics and podcasters did not even elude to, in passing, the current moment of protest right here at UCL - the student encampment or the UCL staff BDS movement against UCL’s involvement with war and humanitarian criminality in Gaza, the West Bank and East Jerusalem. The student encampment was just recently legally shut down and evicted by UCL’s Management. Here i... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

How poor housing shapes school outcomes and why place matters | Research for the Real World
Q: What practical steps could schools or local authorities take based on your findings?
Strengthening enforcement of housing-related regulations (e.g., damp/mold policy) and ensuring parents report issues to landlords can mitigate health and attendance issues. Understanding that housing quality affects learning, teachers and administrators should consider housing conditions as part of student support strategies.

Q: Can you explain how linking survey data with administrative data enhances the study, and what are the trade-offs?
Linking survey data with administrative data provides rich detail from participants alongside near-universal coverage of official records. The trade-off is that administrative data may miss certain groups (like those in private schools or homeschooling) and lacks some contextual detail, so using both together gives a fuller picture.

Q: So thinking about those different housing conditions, what have you found so far to be the strongest associations between those conditions and outcomes for children?
We used six indicators of housing quality; the strongest associations were with damp/mold and overcrowding, based on parental self-reports. These two factors stood out even after controlling for socioeconomic status, and were linked to higher absence and poorer educational outcomes.
Which Green Day song helps you get to the train station on time? | Lived Experience of Dyscalculia
Q: Mia, could you tell us about how your relationship with maths has changed from school to adulthood and what strategies have helped you cope?
In school I was terrified and suffered in silence, but now I rely on supportive family, friends, and technology like calculators and dyscalculia-specific apps, plus tailored tutoring that helps rebuild confidence and reduces the fear of getting things wrong.

Q: Scott, in our research, lots of the people that we interviewed reported very negative emotions regarding mathematics. So can I ask you to start us off by saying, what emotions mathematical tasks evoke in you?
Maths anxiety for me is not confined to the classroom; it leaks into daily life and can be accompanied by deep shame, making me feel like an outsider when I struggle, especially in group settings where the dynamics highlight my difficulty with numbers.
