Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The skin microbiome’s role in atopic dermatitis, with Dr. Maria Teresa García-Romero, MD MPH
Q: What is being observed about the microbiome after biologic or steroid treatments for atopic dermatitis?
There are studies showing that the skin microbiome changes after biologics, steroids, or antibiotics, but more work is needed to understand how to manipulate the microbiome effectively without relying solely on biologics; probiotics are increasingly being explored as adjuncts with some products showing good data in atopic dermatitis.
The skin microbiome’s role in atopic dermatitis, with Dr. Maria Teresa García-Romero, MD MPH
Q: Can you talk to us about the work on empirical antibiotics and how regional factors influence susceptibility?
The research found widespread empirical antibiotic use for flares, but a substantial portion of frequently used antibiotics have suboptimal susceptibility in Staphylococcus aureus from atopic dermatitis patients. Data showed that high-income countries contribute most studies, underscoring data gaps from lower-income regions and the need for culture-guided therapy before treatment.
Trials on probiotics and prebiotics in infant formula, with Prof. Yvan Vandenplas MD PhD
Q: What clinical outcomes or clinical endpoints are achievable with supplementation of formula with prebiotics and probiotics?
The addition of biotics tends to decrease the rate of infectious diseases and antibiotic prescriptions, although hard evidence with clear primary endpoints is still missing.
Trials on probiotics and prebiotics in infant formula, with Prof. Yvan Vandenplas MD PhD
Q: Can you give us kind of a general overview of where this situation is at the moment with supplementing infant formula with biotics of various types?
There is recognition that microbiota is important and that formula-fed infants have different microbiota compared to breastfed infants. Therefore, biotics are added to infant formula to change that microbiota closer to that of breastfed infants.
How ecological dynamics affect pathogens in the gut, with Prof. Kevin Foster PhD
Q: What are your thoughts on diet-microbiome interactions?
The food impacts which strains grow and how they interact in the gut.
