  • Great podcast, but really with the ads??

This is a fantastic podcast that offers a really great overview of new science. The science journalists that produce and record the show are great communicators. To you all, 5 stars. To the people running the business side of the podcast, 1 star. Seriously, for the new briefing chats it’s 2 minutes of ads for 10 minutes of science. The full show has up to 4 minutes of ads?? Seriously, I think Nature’s profit margins are big enough to make this an ad free podcast. Our APCs aren’t enough for you a... more

  • Less engaging than the Science podcast

Informative and interesting comments on papers from the journal. The Science podcast is more engaging and enjoyable to listen to with an equal amount of information. Unexpected because I have a slight preference for Nature as a journal.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Major Ebola outbreak is escalating: what happens next
Q: What is being done to control the outbreak on the ground?
Control relies on traditional public health measures—epidemiology, contact tracing, isolation of suspected cases, disease surveillance, and effective public communication—while researchers work on vaccines and therapeutics for this strain.
Major Ebola outbreak is escalating: what happens next
Q: Why is this Bundibugyo outbreak particularly concerning?
Bundibugyo outbreaks are rare compared to Zaire and often lack specific vaccines or therapeutics, complicating diagnosis and treatment, and potentially increasing mortality without targeted interventions.
Major Ebola outbreak is escalating: what happens next
Q: What is Ebola and how does it spread?
Ebola is a severe viral disease caused by a group of viruses; it typically presents with flu-like symptoms and can cause significant bleeding, spreading through bodily fluids and contaminated surfaces, especially in healthcare settings. The Bundibugyo strain is unusual and requires different testing and management.
Red-light therapy is all the rage — does it work?
Q: What is the evidence for home-use devices versus clinical applications?
Home devices are generally lower power and not always tested; high-intensity, clinically administered light shows more robust effects, but the devices often lack proper validation and need better regulation and trials.
Red-light therapy is all the rage — does it work?
Q: What exactly is red light therapy and how does it work at the cellular level?
Red light therapy uses specific wavelengths to stimulate cells, increasing mitochondrial energy production, with broader effects that may influence inflammation, collagen, and healing, though mechanisms and optimal dosing are still being refined.
