  • The best science podcast

Love this podcast. These wonderful people have kept me sane, informed, and curious for about 10 years now. Solid research, human decency, dry humour. Even hope and courage on occasion.

  • Another excellent episode

Another excellent episode, informative and clearly presented. In an age of increasingly damaging misinformation we need to be able to access the truth, the facts and the discoveries as much as possible. Most people outside of academia have absolutely no access to scientific journals or papers. We are dependent on unreliable, biased sources that bend to political and sometimes social will. Science isn’t always 100% right - that’s the point- science is always discovering more. But it needs to ensu... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Oil, gas & what comes next
Q: Do different crude oils naturally lead to different fuels, or can we make anything from anything?
Within refineries, crude oil is fractionated by boiling points into different fuel streams; lighter crudes tend to yield gasoline and diesel more readily, while heavier crudes require specialized processing and may produce heavier fractions; regional oil quality affects refinery outcomes.
Oil, gas & what comes next
Q: Is there a huge, great bubble down there of oil, or do we leave behind a hole when we pump it out?
Oil is stored in porous sedimentary rocks as bubbles within pore spaces, not as a single large bubble; migration is slow and oil can accumulate in traps under impermeable seals, with gas and oil distribution depending on rock type and burial temperature.
Social media addiction, and the famous honeybee dance
Q: Should platforms be held responsible for addictive features, and what is the policy implication?
There is a view that platforms should be accountable for the products they put out, but the policy space is complex; the boundary between good product design and harmful impact remains a topic of debate.
Social media addiction, and the famous honeybee dance
Q: What does the evidence say about social media addiction as a neuroscientific concept?
From a neuroscientific perspective, overuse alone does not prove addiction; there is currently a gap in evidence, and more robust data is needed to determine whether social media meets criteria of behavioral addiction like gambling disorder.
Brain fats cleared during sleep, and bird poo powered Peru
Q: What evidence do you have that these people were using guano as fertilizer?
Biochemical analyses of maize cobs found in tombs showed high nitrogen values consistent with guano use, indicating that it was a significant source of wealth and agricultural success for the Chincha Kingdom.
