  • The best science podcast

Love this podcast. These wonderful people have kept me sane, informed, and curious for about 10 years now. Solid research, human decency, dry humour. Even hope and courage on occasion.

  • Another excellent episode

Another excellent episode, informative and clearly presented. In an age of increasingly damaging misinformation we need to be able to access the truth, the facts and the discoveries as much as possible. Most people outside of academia have absolutely no access to scientific journals or papers. We are dependent on unreliable, biased sources that bend to political and sometimes social will. Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Hantavirus outbreak: cruising for a biological bruising
Q: Do we have a source yet for the initial infections on the ship?
The investigation suggests likely exposure occurred before boarding, with limited human-to-human transmission on board; ongoing testing and contact tracing are underway to clarify links.
Chernobyl 40 years on, and countering ash dieback disease
Q: What happened at Chernobyl and why is it significant now?
The episode outlines the sequence of events during the 1986 disaster, the immediate and long-term health and environmental impacts, and how the incident reshaped nuclear policy and public acceptance, with expert reflections on what has been learned and what medical and regulatory approaches have changed since.
Microbiome links to Parkinson's, and a massive laser boost
Q: If this signature is identifiable early, is there any evidence that changing the microbiome through diet or other means could modify disease risk?
Early data suggest that adjusting the microbiome through diet could plausibly reduce risk, but this requires further prospective studies to confirm causality and effectiveness.
Microbiome links to Parkinson's, and a massive laser boost
Q: And how far in advance do you think these microbiome changes appear, in terms of predicting risk for Parkinson's?
The researchers believe the microbiome signature could be detected several years before onset of clinical symptoms, offering a potential window for risk stratification and early monitoring.
Oil, gas & what comes next
Q: Do different crude oils naturally lead to different fuels, or can we make anything from anything?
Within refineries, crude oil is fractionated by boiling points into different fuel streams; lighter crudes tend to yield gasoline and diesel more readily, while heavier crudes require specialized processing and may produce heavier fractions; regional oil quality affects refinery outcomes.
