  • The best science podcast

Love this podcast. These wonderful people have kept me sane, informed, and curious for about 10 years now. Solid research, human decency, dry humour. Even hope and courage on occasion.

  • Another excellent episode

Another excellent episode, informative and clearly presented. In an age of increasingly damaging misinformation we need to be able to access the truth, the facts and the discoveries as much as possible. Most people outside of academia have absolutely no access to scientific journals or papers. We are dependent on unreliable, biased sources that bend to political and sometimes social will. Science isn’t always 100% right - that’s the point- science is always discovering more. But it needs to ensu... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Dealing with depression
Q: Why is depression called an umbrella term and how does that affect treatment options?
Because depression can result from multiple neural pathways and systems, different patients may respond to different treatments, so clinicians tailor approaches to individual neurobiology and symptoms.
Ebola outbreak in the DRC, and Artemis III preparation
Q: What are the main strategies to control the current outbreak?
Key strategies include rapid case finding, isolation, contact tracing, ring vaccination where feasible, and ensuring healthcare workers have proper PPE to prevent nosocomial transmission; vaccines may help but are not a sole solution if deployed late.
Ebola outbreak in the DRC, and Artemis III preparation
Q: How does the Bundibugyo strain differ from prior Ebola outbreaks and what does that imply for surveillance?
The Bundibugyo strain appears to have a different epidemiology with some transmission patterns similar to past outbreaks, but the spread can be faster due to increased mobility and porous borders; surveillance and laboratory capacity are essential to identify and distinguish this strain early.
Hantavirus outbreak: cruising for a biological bruising
Q: Do we have a source yet for the initial infections on the ship?
The investigation suggests likely exposure occurred before boarding, with limited human-to-human transmission on board; ongoing testing and contact tracing are underway to clarify links.
Chernobyl 40 years on, and countering ash dieback disease
Q: What happened at Chernobyl and why is it significant now?
The episode outlines the sequence of events during the 1986 disaster, the immediate and long-term health and environmental impacts, and how the incident reshaped nuclear policy and public acceptance, with expert reflections on what has been learned and what medical and regulatory approaches have changed since.
