  • Pluto is a planet

•EPISODE: “Should Pluto be a Planet Again?” In which the supposedly neutral BBC host advances his anti-Pluto biased personal slant seconds before pronouncing “Uranus” in the prudish American fashion.

This propaganda slop makes “Crowd Science” look like the Nobel Institute.

  • Why am I listening ads? (paid subscriber)

Title. What’s going on here? What’s the point of paying to remove ads and have ads not removed?

Also: Tom Whipple makes this podcast hard to listen to. Guy just doesn’t have the vibe. Please bring Marnie Chesterton back.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Plankton's untapped potential
Q: How can plankton be utilized or cultivated in ways that might help address climate concerns, and what are the risks?
There is potential for leveraging plankton in carbon sequestration or bio-inspired technologies, but it requires careful science, strong governance, and consideration of unintended consequences before any large-scale deployment.
Plankton's untapped potential
Q: What exactly is the Plankton Manifesto addressing, and why is plankton so overlooked in biodiversity discussions?
Plankton is an umbrella term for a vast diversity of tiny organisms that drive the biological carbon pump and climate processes; they are essential for life but have been underrepresented in policy discussions compared to charismatic megafauna and reef organisms.
Plankton's untapped potential
Q: Vincent, let's start with you. You're actually an economist. Tell us how you got into the sea.
He shifted from examining land-based hunger to oceanic resources, recognizing that only about 2% of global calories come from oceans despite the ocean covering 70% of the planet, and he framed the ocean as a foundational source for life and civilization.
El Niño is nigh, but so what?
Q: How does this interact? Does global warming make the forecasting and the impacts of all this harder to understand?
The guests explain that since the last strong El Niño, global average temperatures have risen, and the year-after effects can include a spike in temperatures; this layering of warming on top of El Niño dynamics could push global temperatures toward new records, while forecasts become more confident as observations improve.
How did President Trump transform science in 2025?
Q: How has Dian Fossey's work contributed to modern primatology?
Her extensive longitudinal studies showed individual gorilla personalities and behaviors, influencing conservation and research methods.
