  • Fantastic podcast

As a native South Dakotan who moved away decades ago I really enjoy connecting with my home state through your interviews. South Dakotans are amazing people with important stories. I just recently discovered this podcast and am glad I did. I’m looking forward to listening to past episodes on road trips. I played sports for Howard in the eighties and love to hear from athletes who played then.

Merlin and Mary Jane Doyle
Q: How did Merlin view balancing roles as principal, athletic director, and coach?
He believed that the teams and students were capable, and that dedicated student-athletes made his job feasible, allowing him to contribute without overburdening himself.
Hailee Fischer
Q: What happened in the state championship game against St. Thomas More and how did it feel to win another title?
Hailee recalls a gritty, end-of-game scenario that extended to late chances before her team clinched the victory and then the relief of winning two consecutive titles, underscoring the team's mental toughness and her role in making key saves.
Hailee Fischer
Q: So what did you do to deserve the red card?
Hailee explains it was a 50-50 challenge just outside the box where she and an opponent collided; she was a young, aggressive goalkeeper and received a red card, but it ultimately fueled her determination to improve and comeback for the state tournament.
JoElle Byre Benson
Q: What did it mean to be named Miss Basketball during your senior year?
Being named Miss Basketball was an honor that validated years of hard work, and it was particularly meaningful given strong competition from players from multiple schools; the moment was celebrated despite initial skepticism from some coaches about Sioux Falls players.
Kim Weed
Q: What was it like being part of the first years when volleyball became sanctioned in South Dakota, and how did you get involved as a coach?
It was a natural fit after learning the game from athletes during those early years; I saw the potential and felt I could guide young players through the transition, eventually taking on volleyball coaching in addition to basketball.
