  • Pleasant Surprise that has moved to the top of my podcast rotation

Recently moved up to SF in July and I had only known of John Gaskins as Harry Canary (great bobblehead) and I recently learned he does podcasts too on top of Dakota News Now! As an Iowan we had a couple radio shows/podcasts that covered area sports at all levels and I am very glad I found this one. I consume both Happy Hour and Nobody’s Listening Anyway now. Thank you John, keep up the good work, see ya at The Birdcage!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Missy Heidrick (CBS/Midco) seizes up SDSU's matchup with Washington + talks NDSU & USD postseason
Q: What makes SDSU a tough out in this NCAA run once they reach the round of 32 potential opponents?
Their culture, coaching, and the willingness of a deep roster to step up in tournament play, combined with a defense-first identity and guard versatility, give them a tangible edge when facing teams that may underestimate a mid-major program in a high-stakes environment.
NLA: Zim on SDSU women's dominance (again) at SLT, USD's hoops coaches (Eighmey getting new deal, Peterson not), Jacks first spring football practice, NDSU's immediate presence in MWC (projected to be favorite in every game)
Q: What factors are influencing USD's coaching contracts and how are they approaching extensions?
Schemmel explains that extensions depend on performance, budget, and long-term alignment with the university's goals, and acknowledges the complexity of buyouts and the transfer portal era while signaling a readiness to discuss terms after a couple of years.
(FULL) USD A.D. Jon Schemmel on hoops coaches' deals, Summit League stability and future, and Summit League Tournament future
Q: How do NIL and transfer dynamics affect recruiting and coach retention in USD?
NIL opportunities are growing, but USD emphasizes building through high school talent and developing players while using NIL strategically to stay competitive, with coaching contracts reflecting a balance between loyalty and market realities.
(FULL) USD A.D. Jon Schemmel on hoops coaches' deals, Summit League stability and future, and Summit League Tournament future
Q: What is on the table for Summit League decisions beyond the tournament site?
There are broad discussions about realignment movement, revenue sharing, and the long-term structure of the league, but no single decisive agenda item was announced during the meeting.
FULL MONDAY SHOW: SDSU's home court SLT advantage (unfair?) and CBS Summit League analyst Missy Heidrick on the Jacks women and Bison men titles
Q: How did the transfer process move so quickly, and what should others know about evaluating new programs?
She describes a fast, speed-dating-like process where patience, degree completion, and values alignment were crucial, with USD repeatedly showing genuine interest and clear vision.
