  • Pleasant Surprise that has moved to the top of my podcast rotation

Recently moved up to SF in July and I had only known of John Gaskins as Harry Canary (great bobblehead) and I recently learned he does podcasts too on top of Dakota News Now! As an Iowan we had a couple radio shows/podcasts that covered area sports at all levels and I am very glad I found this one. I consume both Happy Hour and Nobody’s Listening Anyway now. Thank you John, keep up the good work, see ya at The Birdcage!

Q: With NIL, what are the realistic expectations for keeping a player like Mariano longer term?
Huber explains that in Division II, NIL opportunities are evolving but not as pronounced as in Division I; there is interest from alumni, but they're focusing on scholarships and financial support to retain players, with a potential for some NIL-style opportunities through alumni involvement.

Q: What makes Mariano Gomez so special beyond the numbers?
Huber points to his fastball command, strike-throwing ability, and a good slider, along with his ability to locate pitches and compete in the strike zone; these traits help him perform at a high level in conference play and in the NCAA tournament.
FULL SHOW: Tim Huber, Augie baseball & softball dominance, Vikings Mount Rushmore, Timberwolves Talk after the Flying Elbow Game
Q: So my first question, obviously he's really damn good. How'd you find him out of Honduras?
The coach explains it came through a scout connection (Les Pajari) who trusted the program, leading to a Zoom call with Mariano Gomez and his parents, ultimately resulting in a commitment to Augie; the pitcher has excelled since arriving and contributed significantly this season.
FULL SHOW: Bruns to USD, Gronowski & Bouman updates from their NFL markets, Timberwolves Talk after Game 2 trampling
Q: What are the implications of Isaac Bruns transferring to USC for USD and Summit League visibility?
Bruns' move to USC signals that mid-major scorers can reach high-profile programs, potentially increasing USD's visibility and attracting future talent, while also highlighting the need for strong development and partnerships with larger programs to maximize opportunity for Summit League players.
SD Sports Lounge: Justin Sell, Jerry Olszweski, Matt Zimmer, and the new "Where Are They Now" series
Q: What is your take on expanding the NCAA basketball tournament to 76 teams and how it affects mid-major programs?
