  • Straightforward and Super Helpful

Really appreciate this podcast. I've been dealing with IBS-C for about 3 years now and have tried a lot of different things. The low FODMAP diet helped a bit at first, but I’m still constantly bloated and constipated. This podcast gave me a new perspective and helped me understand things in a much clearer way. The episodes are super informative, straight to the point, and easy to follow. No fluff, just solid advice. I’m looking forward to trying out what Brooke and Jessie suggest.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

31. IBS and Probiotics: Evidence-Based Strains for Bloating and Relief
Q: What does the current evidence say about probiotics for IBS and what is likely to change in upcoming guidelines?
Overall, probiotics show modest benefit for IBS, but guidelines have been cautious due to heterogeneity and trial quality. Expect future guidelines to emphasize strain-specific recommendations and possibly include more endorsements as high-quality trials accumulate.
31. IBS and Probiotics: Evidence-Based Strains for Bloating and Relief
Q: How reliable are probiotic products on the market and how should clinicians guide patients in selecting them?
Product reliability is variable due to lax regulation; clinicians should rely on evidence-based guides like the Clinical Guide to Probiotic Products and the Alliance for Education on Probiotics to recommend specific, well-documented strains and brands with demonstrated benefits.
31. IBS and Probiotics: Evidence-Based Strains for Bloating and Relief
Q: What exactly is a probiotic, and how does it differ from prebiotics and postbiotics?
A probiotic is a live bacterial strain that, in adequate amounts, provides a health benefit. Prebiotics feed beneficial gut bacteria, and postbiotics are non-living metabolites produced by bacteria; together they form a spectrum often referred to as biotics, with careful distinctions and evidence required for each.
29. IBS Triggers, Low FODMAP Diet & Eating Disorders: What You Need to Know with Beth Rosen
Q: What advice would you give to listeners about reintroducing foods after a successful elimination phase?
Reintroductions should be gradual and data-driven, watching for symptom patterns and considering delayed reactions. You don't necessarily have to remove all FODMAP groups permanently; the goal is to restore a sustainable, enjoyable diet that minimizes symptoms while reducing anxiety around food.
29. IBS Triggers, Low FODMAP Diet & Eating Disorders: What You Need to Know with Beth Rosen
Q: How does the low-FODMAP diet work in practice and who should consider it?
The low-FODMAP diet is a three-phase process: elimination to diagnose which fermentable carbs impact symptoms, followed by careful reintroduction to identify tolerances, and finally a personalization phase that allows a broader diet while avoiding triggers. It should be guided by a GI-trained dietitian to tailor it to the individual and to monitor for signs of disordered eating behaviors.
