  • Keep saying the Truth

I’ve listened to your podcast since the beginning . I’m proud of your courage and your dedication to taking on the “old school “system. Spread the light to Tennessee. We need it too.

  • COJ #183

Wonderful episode and I wanted to remind all that women only have rights since the 70’s before then they had no rights to vote or have a personal bank account. So we have some good now, we are definitely not in the “same” place as men’s rights. Would not be surprised if it takes another 50 years for actual equality with how things are being handled now, smh pretty sad write.

Keep up the great work keeping sunlight on all you do 🥰

  • Lost its way

Use to be good and enjoyable. Now it is unlistenable. Mandy in her constant victim hood and Liz with her inability to report without name calling. It reeks of a 13 year old middle school mean girls who are too insecure to live life without trying to tear others down. It’s too bad you couldn’t stick to reporting facts and now just whine about things you don’t agree with.

  • A Letter of Appreciation

Mandy Matney, Liz Farrell, and Eric Bland,

Thank you for shining a light where it is often difficult to shine—especially in small towns and throughout the South, where silence, influence, and power can too often overshadow truth.

I’m a Black man, a proud Army veteran of 10 years, and a survivor of sexual assault as both a child and an adult. I hold a master’s degree and hope to pursue a Juris Doctor in the future. Eric, I find myself listening closely whenever you speak—not only because of you... more

  • The good stuff

Repeat listening to the beginnings of COJ since the Murdaugh case is to be retried, and this is absolutely the good stuff. The trio of Mandy, Liz and Eric are the perfect blend to keep listeners hooked. The losses of the victims make me feel guilty for enjoying this podcast, but showing sunlight on the crooked is necessary.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

COJ #183 - No 'Reasonable Woman': When Surviving Is the Crime With Author Justine van der Leun
Q: Tell us about the reasonable man, self-defense standard.
The standard has historically been framed around a 'reasonable man' rather than a 'reasonable woman,' and juries are asked to imagine what a 'reasonable person' would do in the circumstances, which often excludes women's lived experiences of fear and abuse.
COJ #181 - Dr. Jermaine Johnson on Cowards, Courage & Two Systems of Justice
Q: How do you respond to accusations of electability and being labeled as too black to win?
He rejects the electability argument, stating that voters are capable of choosing a qualified candidate based on merit and policy, and he emphasizes his life experience, education, and public service as evidence of his qualifications.
COJ #181 - Dr. Jermaine Johnson on Cowards, Courage & Two Systems of Justice
Q: What motivated you to run for governor, given your background and experiences?
Johnson explains that his life story—from homelessness to representing a district and his focus on two systems of justice—drives his political ambition, aiming to restore power to the people and address core infrastructure, healthcare, and education issues.
COJ #167 - Journalist Matt Shaer On The Truths Found Between Entertainment & Justice
Q: How did you feel coming off of long-form journalism though, turning something into a podcast?
I had a lot of questions about the ethics of it and the worry that podcasting could be consumed as entertainment rather than serious journalism.
COJ #167 - Journalist Matt Shaer On The Truths Found Between Entertainment & Justice
Q: What gives you hope and what motivates you to continue to do the work that you're doing?
Getting people to pay attention to systemic issues in a compelling way, often through the medium of true crime storytelling, gives me hope.
