  • Hugely Recommend

It’s hard to find news without spin these days, especially at the local level. There’s a dearth of real news and meaningful analysis. Sunil Dasgupta fills the gap. He questions, analyzes, and summarizes without spin, and he covers stuff no one else does. Hugely recommended especially if you’re in Montgomery County, DelMarVa or even the great state of Maryland.

  • More than Maryland

While focused on all things Maryland politics, this podcast also does a good job of overall civic lessons during the recap of the conversation. Professor Dasgupta definitely has honed the skill of the Socratic method. Note to guests: prepare well for this interview.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Would You Go to Prison for Your Beliefs? Tim Martin Did
Q: Why did you think this would raise awareness, and what did you hope to achieve?
I hoped that disruption would wake people up and make them question the underlying system, and I wanted to show that someone trusted by society — a professional — would take personal costs to highlight the urgency of climate action.
Would You Go to Prison for Your Beliefs? Tim Martin Did
Q: Why did you do it?
I did it because our culture is sick. We inoculate ourselves with positive self-regard while we continue to make unhealthy choices within this unhealthy system that we have.
Data Center Lessons from Loudoun County, Va
Q: How has Loudoun balanced tax revenue from data centers with the needs of residents and infrastructure?
Loudoun benefits from substantial data-center revenue that supports lower taxes and public services, but the county must manage the infrastructure costs and ensure ratepayers are protected, which has led to infrastructure caps and planned upgrades.
Data Center Lessons from Loudoun County, Va
Q: You talked about the white paper and the six factors for data-center development. What are the key takeaways for other jurisdictions?
The core lessons are to define clear guardrails early—noise, power, water usage, emissions, setback, and appearance—so that development is predictable, and to pursue incentives or CBAs that align data-center benefits with community protections, not just fast approvals.
What Do the Woes at Penn State Tell Us about the Future of Higher Education?
Q: What is this reorganization about?
Randy explains that Penn State is consolidating by closing several Commonwealth campuses while allowing University Park to grow, a move driven by budget considerations, enrollment trends, and the desire to centralize resources. He notes that the campuses facing closure are often in economically distressed areas and that the changes are intended to improve overall efficiency, even as they disrupt local communities.
