Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

From Prison Officer To Elite 15: Liam McCrory’s Rise Through HYROX
Q: What's your approach to burpees and your quickness there?
Burpees come from years of plyometric work; I focus on efficient knee-up technique and a smooth, consistent jump to stay fast through the set and keep my run after it strong.
From Prison Officer To Elite 15: Liam McCrory’s Rise Through HYROX
Q: How do you structure your training week given you balance a full-time job?
I follow a fairly rigid weekly skeleton with a big focus on running and Hyrox-specific sessions, while letting my main Hyrox coach set the running and Hyrox sessions and my strength work, then I adapt around work and sleep. I aim for about 14-15 hours of quality work a week and prioritize recovery and sleep.
From Prison Officer To Elite 15: Liam McCrory’s Rise Through HYROX
Q: When you first jumped into Hyrox, what exposed you the most and made you realize you needed to work on certain elements?
The London pro race showed me how hard the sleds and overall course are; that experience convinced me I needed to build stamina and improve pacing, which set the direction for my training."
Episode 15 - Mastering the Ergs with James Hall
Q: How important is stroke rate versus force curve in Hyrox?
Stroke rate should stay above a soft minimum (generally above 40 SPM for Ski Erg), but the key is staying near the peak force moment on each stroke. You must hit and ride the peak with quick, rhythmic pulls rather than crawling at low cadence; it's about efficiency and sustaining peak power within the movement.
Episode 15 - Mastering the Ergs with James Hall
Q: What did a typical year of training look like for your world record attempts?
I built a base with general strength (GPP), then dedicated 5–6 Erg sessions weekly, interspersed with longer Zone 2 work and targeted TT-style sessions to push threshold, while keeping the movements specific to Ski Erg mechanics. Cross-training was minimal; the Erg and strength work were the main drivers.
