  • A Perfect Blend

Zach deliveres the perfect balance between data-driven, science-backed talk and personal experience. This creates conversations that are personable and compelling, and there are always little gems of actionable next steps to take as an ultra runner.

  • Poor information to advertisement ratio

Of a 25min podcast 10min was spend on his sponsors, code, draw, and socials…. That one of the worst ratio I have seen in the podcast world.

  • Open-minded discussions

Zach covers a wide-range of health, wellness, and running topics. I’m always learning from keeping an open-mind to his and his guest’s opinions, the same way Zach approaches his own evolution. We are lucky to have Zach (and occasionally Nicole) in the space. ✌🏻💚🏃🏼‍♂️

  • Insight and passion from one of the best

I’ve been following HPO for a couple years now. While there are a number of great podcasts on running, I can say that HPO has had the most dramatic effect on my personal running improvement. Zach’s ability to discuss complex topics ranging from nutrition, mindset, training, and general running philosophy is impressive. He’s an important voice for the ultra-running community and those of us who are open to learn are lucky to have such an accessible podcast to improve our own performance. Thanks Z... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Episode 485: Long Term Running Improvement | Brant Stachel
Q: How do you structure marathon-to-marathon development for athletes like Nobbs?
He describes phased progression, gap analyses against top performers, and balancing long base-building with targeted speed and race-specific work to sustain performance over multiple years.
Episode 485: Long Term Running Improvement | Brant Stachel
Q: Tell us about your background and how you got into running and coaching.
Brant shares his Canadian coaching path, starting in high school and moving into university-level coaching, where he worked with medalists and national athletes, eventually expanding into mental performance work and coaching age-group runners while maintaining a foot in high-performance environments.
Episode 484: Influencers v. Athletes | Tommy Lewis
Q: Why is running less of a spectator sport than other sports, and how does that affect storytelling?
Running relies more on participation and storytelling than on mass spectator engagement, so the best growth comes from narratives that invite audiences into athletes' journeys rather than just showcasing race results.
Episode 457: David Roche | King of the Carbs
Q: All right, David, welcome back to the podcast. How has your fueling approach evolved since Leadville, especially regarding high-carb intake and caffeine?
The approach has shifted toward higher carbohydrate intake (around 150 g/hr in some segments) with careful management of caffeine, exploring how gut tolerance and pacing interact with effort levels. I've also emphasized GI training and experimenting with product types and ratios to optimize absorption and performance.
Episode 478: 100 Mile Record Redemption | Raj Pannu
Q: Jackpot is interesting because one loop is 1.17 to 1.19 miles. How did you approach fueling over these loops and what carbohydrate strategy did you use?
I based my fueling on every three loops, taking about 18 ounces every three loops and adjusting to total fluid and electrolyte needs; I maintained around 50 ounces per hour with careful sodium intake, and I used real-time adjustments based on how I felt and how my body was responding to the fluids and heat.
