  • Awesome

Cracking podcast and interview with Robert Lyman. Great follow up for me having read James Holland’s book on Burma. Just watched World at War episode 14 “it’s a lovely day tomorrow” and now sat with a digital copy of Robert’s book “Bill Slim”.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Nursing at the Front Line, with Graham Bandy
Q: What was your experience like working with Scrafield's records?
It was difficult because he didn't mention much about the individuals he treated, but I managed to extract meaningful stories.
MARKET GARDEN 80: Arnhem-Black Tuesday
Q: What is the most important thing that doesn't happen as a result?
Due to a lack of transparency on succession, the brigadiers do not handle decision-making clearly during Urquhart's absence, leading to ineffective responses to the evolving battle situation.
MARKET GARDEN 80: Arnhem-Black Tuesday
Q: What is the most important thing that happens on Black Tuesday?
The most important thing that happens is Roy Urquhart establishing a succession order without informing his brigadiers, leading to confusion during critical decisions.
MARKET GARDEN 80: September Hope- The American Perspective of Operation Market Garden
Q: Do you agree with that 90% success rate?
No, saying it was 90% successful is nonsensical; the operation's primary goal was not achieved, so it cannot be deemed successful at all.
MARKET GARDEN 80: September Hope- The American Perspective of Operation Market Garden
Q: Why did we lose? Why were my buddies wounded there?
The failure of Market Garden was due to a range of factors, including underestimating German defenses, overextending forces, and the problematic execution of the operation itself.
