Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The Women's Orchestra of Auschwitz with Anne Sebba
Q: What inspired you to tell this story and write about the Women's Orchestra of Auschwitz?
Anne explains that she wanted to address the Holocaust honestly through voices connected to the event, including her own family's ties and the discovery of parallel moments—such as her father's involvement in actions nearby—that deepened her inquiry into memory, survival, and the complexities surrounding the orchestra.
Red Dawn over China with Frank Dikötter
Q: Where does Mao fit into the early party dynamics, given the archival emphasis on Stalin?
Mao emerges as a significant figure by the late 1930s, but the early trajectory is dominated by external guidance from Moscow; Mao's leadership solidifies as a result of consolidation during and after the Long March, under Soviet influence.
Red Dawn over China with Frank Dikötter
Q: What initially attracted you to researching the story of pre-1949 China?
I wanted to see whether the commonly told 'fairy tale' of a united, reforming communist movement held up against primary sources, particularly regarding how the Soviet Union influenced early Chinese politics.
Members Behaving Badly with Debbie Kilroy
Q: How did public perception of politicians change historically?
The media gradually played a role in revealing political misconduct, but it wasn't as sensationalized as it is today.
Members Behaving Badly with Debbie Kilroy
Q: Who were the people who were originally MPs and how has that changed?
Parliament was initially an event called by the monarch and MPs weren't career politicians; this has drastically evolved into a more professionalized system.
