Just learned about this podcast so fairly new, not many episodes in. But I’m enjoying it. The hosts are congenial and make it fun, informative, and entertaining. Even the darkest material they keep light enough. You should listen if you have any interest in Berlin. (A fabulous city!) One observation: Jonny really criticized the book author about the S-Bahn murders for inaccuracies. Which was ironic considering the errors Jonny made in the November revolution episode. I cannot recommend this podcast enough! As someone who moved to Berlin/Germany as an adult, I love getting to hear more in-depth history that I never learned when I was younger. Pip and Jonny make a great show together, bringing in their own perspectives and relating history to today’s world. Absolutely never dry…super interesting and funny (where appropriate)!
I started listening to this podcast in anticipation of an upcoming trip to Berlin and I’m so glad I did. Pip and Jonny are fun and enthusiastic (even when the content veers into darker territory) and make for great hosts. I just finished the first season and I feel like I have a much better sense of the city’s history. There’s a way in which the characters and storylines of each episode - all varied and purposefully eclectic - intersect over time to paint a textured and multi-faceted picture of ... more
I’ve visited Berlin many times but Pip and Jonny bring out things I missed. I’d love to see a programme about 1980s West Berlin Music and the great alternative culture palace that was Tacheles. It’d work as a great resurgence of West Berlin culture. Maybe Spargelfest too!! vielen danke im voraus Pip and Jonny
As an English speaking resident of Berlin I really appreciate this podcast which gives lots of insight into some of the lesser known stories of my adopted city’s history from Tempelhofer Feld to sbahn serial killer to the heroes and villains of this ever evolving place. it’s really brilliant.

Narrated by two Berlin tour guides, this show blends historical storytelling with on-the-ground insights, covering a broad sweep of Berlin's past—from the Weimar culture and its artistic renaissance to the Nazi era, World War II, and Cold War legacies. Episodes routinely pair deep historical analysis with accessible anecdotes, exploring lesser-told stories, controversial figures, and the city's evolving memory culture, often tying history to present-day Berlin.
