Women's history doesn't have be boring or depressing. I tell the stories of extraordinary women in history, including queens, slaves, spies, scientists, artists, wives, mothers, and more. But most women didn't leave us enough material for a biography, so I also tell you what it was like to be an ordinary woman, including what they wore, how they did housework, how they worked, and how they played.... more

  • She knows of what she speaks!

As a living history professional, I can tell you, there is a lot of misinformation out there, in books, newspapers, magazines, and mostly in the world wide cyber space (and at bricks and mortar places too!). I have been so pleased at the accuracy of Her Half of History’s research. (Love the sources lists!). And her presentation style is perfect. A great mix of surprise, awe and frustration…along with a great sense of humor! Great job!

  • Taking Mrs. Claus out of Obscurity

Engaging history about the woman behind the man - Mrs. Claus. Episode starts with the history on Mr. Claus himself then blends into the mention of his dutiful wife in stories and poems in the 1800’s. Then some more modern and well-deserved representations of “the Missus” in recent times. Lots of fun to listen to - so grab a glass of eggnog and enjoy!!

Childbirth, Literacy, Sources, the State of the World, and Other Listener Questions
Q: When you can find only one main source about the historical woman, how do you determine how accurate that source is?
You have to critically assess the source's authorship, motives and context to evaluate its reliability, understanding that two historians can interpret the same source differently.
Childbirth, Literacy, Sources, the State of the World, and Other Listener Questions
Q: Where do you find all of your sources? Are you combing through archives with gloves on or what?
I use a variety of sources, including primary ones like diaries and secondary ones like scholarly articles. My local library, JSTOR, Internet Archive, and Wikimedia Commons are crucial for my research.
Childbirth, Literacy, Sources, the State of the World, and Other Listener Questions
Q: What made you decide to start a podcast? And how did you decide on a topic?
This podcast is a COVID project. I was inspired by history podcasts I listened to, and when COVID canceled my music gigs, starting a podcast felt reasonable. I chose Women's History since women lived everywhere but history podcasts often overlooked them.
Agriculture: Was It a Bad Idea? (ep. 15.1)
Q: Why did humanity ever bother to invent agriculture?
Despite the risks and challenges associated with agriculture, such as labor intensity and the initial loss of social equality, early humans likely perceived potential benefits like food surpluses, which could have been attractive amid changing environmental conditions.
