  • TOO MANY COMMERCIALS

Honestly, this would be one of my favorite podcasts of all time, but the amount of commercials compared to the amount of content per episode is insane. Every episode, my blood pressure increases because of how many damn commercials there are. If you’re going to be a 30 min per episode podcast, stop making 7-10 minutes of that episode freaking commercials.

Pretty good podcast. At first I found myself getting distracted even though the content is good. Bumped it up to 1.3 and it’s was better.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Daughters of the Empress (with Veronica Buckley)
Q: How did you choose how to refer to these women given they all share Maria at the beginning of their names?
Buckley explains they used the German forms and sometimes Michelly avoided repeating Maria to prevent confusion, instead using nicknames or the distinct parts of their names to distinguish each sister in documents and letters.
Maria Theresa's Medical Legacy (with Matt Kaplan)
Q: Where can the good people find you if they want to follow you?
They can find me on the Macmillan page of St. Martin's Press.
Maria Theresa's Medical Legacy (with Matt Kaplan)
Q: What was in the antiseptic hand wash that Semmelweis came up with?
Semmelweis used a mild chlorine solution to eliminate odor and bacteria that lead to infections after childbirth.
Æthelstan and a United England (with David Woodman)
Q: Do we know if Æthelstan was able to conquer territory diplomatically, or do we assume it was more through military force?
It's likely a mix of both negotiation and military might that allowed Æthelstan to succeed in uniting the kingdoms.
Æthelstan and a United England (with David Woodman)
Q: Why do you think Æthelstan isn't really in the public consciousness very much?
He had poor PR at his court compared to Alfred the Great who had a contemporary biographer. Æthelstan's achievements remained largely unchronicled.
