  • Heart of the matter

This podcast is fantastic and it has quickly become one of my and my husband’s favorites. We both work in sports & have been super hesitant to sign our 5yr old up for anything because youth sports is just insane. So many of these topics and issues that are covered here ring true for us. It’s so nice to know we aren’t the only ones asking why we can’t just have t-shirts and rec leagues.

  • This should be a mandatory listen for your kids to participate in youth sports!

I am blown away with how amazing this entire podcast is. As a former college athlete and survivor of crazy youth sport parents, I thought I was doing a good job of being the opposite, but this show continues to educate and raise the bar of how we can all be better. If you truly listen to this with an open mind, an open heart, and a proverbial mirror to look into, it is life changing and your kids will thank you. Just like there are mandatory coaching videos on safe sport, concussions, etc., I th... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Fun and Hard Can Both Exist in Youth Sports (with Jake Savicki)
Q: What has your coaching experience taught you about shaping kids' love of the game rather than pressing for outcomes?
Understanding each kid's motivations and reacting to their needs individually helps; success comes from building trust, prioritizing effort and attitude, and creating 10-minute practice habits that compound over time rather than burning out the child.
Raising Healthy Humans Through Youth Sports (with Dr. Jeremy Alland, Chicago Bulls + White Sox)
Q: What age do my kids start playing tackle football?
It's individualized, but a common guidance is around one to two years before high school if they show readiness; delaying can reduce head injury risk though may impact skill development.
Raising Healthy Humans Through Youth Sports (with Dr. Jeremy Alland, Chicago Bulls + White Sox)
Q: What age is strength training appropriate for kids?
There is no fixed age; start early with movement patterns and light resistance, focus on form and fun, and gradually introduce more as they grow, ensuring no excessive loads.
Raising Healthy Humans Through Youth Sports (with Dr. Jeremy Alland, Chicago Bulls + White Sox)
Q: Is too much muscle development too young really a thing?
If movements stay within safe, functional ranges and focus on form rather than heavy maximal loads, weightlifting is beneficial for kids; the key is avoiding heavy lifting and ensuring proper supervision and technique.
Raising Healthy Humans Through Youth Sports (with Dr. Jeremy Alland, Chicago Bulls + White Sox)
Q: Hey Doc, quick question. What's the best way to prevent knee injuries for girls?
Implement ACL prevention programs, observe knee alignment during jumps (box jump test), and regularly reassess during puberty when growth and hormonal changes affect muscle balance; use proven warm-up protocols like FIFA 11.
