  • Always an interesting listen

I came across the hammer and chisel podcast when Zach Even-esh was a guest on the show and since then I have been listening to every episode. Heck gives an interesting perspective being an ex football player, high-level strength & conditioning coach, power lifter, and nutritionist. Though I am older (his father’s generation), the insight that he gives each week is helpful to my own journey and I enjoy listening. Highly recommend.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Ep. 98: Maximus McCall, Unorthodox Diets and Supplements
Q: Where would you ideally set protein intake for advanced lifters who are trying to maximize size and strength?
He describes a two-to-three times body weight range as a starting point for protein, with individual adjustments based on progress, digestive tolerance, and the ability to consume carbs; elite athletes may tolerate very high carbs and different protein ceilings depending on genetics and training.
Ep. 98: Maximus McCall, Unorthodox Diets and Supplements
Q: Can you talk about your general philosophy pertaining to high-protein intakes relative to, or in the context of performance and body composition?
Max explains that high-protein intake has long been a cornerstone of progress, argues against ultra-low-protein dogma, and emphasizes matching protein to the individual's training load, appetite, and metabolic response, especially as athletes advance beyond beginner stages.
Ep. 96: Dr. Ben Skutnik | Nutrition Made Simple
Q: What are your initial considerations when helping someone lose body fat?
Start by addressing overall energy balance, prioritize evidence-based approaches, and avoid extremist diets. Emphasize the foundational role of lean mass and training quality, and be mindful of the individual's training age and lifestyle to tailor a plan that is sustainable.
Q&A Answered with Will Ratelle: Training/Nutrition
Q: Overhead press plateau. What variations help?
Push-press and pin presses are highlighted as top variations to overload the overhead press; adding slight variation like incline or seated press can help build a base before returning to standing press.
Q&A Answered with Will Ratelle: Training/Nutrition
Q: Best types of isometrics and eccentrics for strength/athleticism?
They discuss lower-leg isometrics and dynamic overcoming isometrics (e.g., RDL with pins, pulling into pins at heavy loads), plus contrasting to explosive movements for potentiation. They provide concrete progressions from long-duration to loaded, time-limited holds and finishing with max effort, and show how to weave these into training blocks.
