  • Always an interesting listen

I came across the hammer and chisel podcast when Zach Even-esh was a guest on the show and since then I have been listening to every episode. Heck gives an interesting perspective being an ex football player, high-level strength & conditioning coach, power lifter, and nutritionist. Though I am older (his father’s generation), the insight that he gives each week is helpful to my own journey and I enjoy listening. Highly recommend.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Ep. 87: Tom Hibbert, How to Train for Strongman
Q: How do you balance training for multiple events in a week without overloading the CNS?
Rotate events across the week, pair heavy days with lighter speed days, and separate assistance work; consider two-a-day setups with neural and speed work in the morning and assistance in the evening to maximize quality and recovery.
Ep. 87: Tom Hibbert, How to Train for Strongman
Q: How should a beginner approach overhead pressing and log vs axel preferences during early development?
Begin with multiple weekly pressing exposures (one push press, one strict press, and one more variation) and progress to log as soon as available; emphasize technique and leg drive, and tailor based on available equipment and the athlete's response to training.
Ep. 87: Tom Hibbert, How to Train for Strongman
Q: What is the initial programming framework for an athlete without a competition in mind?
Start with the big five lifts (deadlift, yoke, log, squat, stone loading) and use a multi-frequency approach like the Norwegian method to build neurological efficiency before increasing intensity, while keeping a clear progression and a competition date in mind to stay accountable.
Monthly Q&A! All things diet, training and more
Q: What would your top three workout splits be?
Two splits: a four-day upper/lower split with two upper body days and two lower body days, and a five-day split that adds a dedicated back day and separates some upper body pressing and pulling into distinct sessions.
Monthly Q&A! All things diet, training and more
Q: On a full body split, do you alternate between muscle groups throughout the session or train half the body then the other?
The preferred approach is flexible; he rarely runs strict full-body sessions but explains a tiered system (tiered emphasis) and rotation across days so the primary movement, a lower body, and an upper body movement rotate in priority each day.
