  • Always an interesting listen

I came across the hammer and chisel podcast when Zach Even-esh was a guest on the show and since then I have been listening to every episode. Heck gives an interesting perspective being an ex football player, high-level strength & conditioning coach, power lifter, and nutritionist. Though I am older (his father’s generation), the insight that he gives each week is helpful to my own journey and I enjoy listening. Highly recommend.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Q&A Answered with Will Ratelle: Training/Nutrition
Q: Overhead press plateau. What variations help?
Push-press and pin presses are highlighted as top variations to overload the overhead press; adding slight variation like incline or seated press can help build a base before returning to standing press.
Q&A Answered with Will Ratelle: Training/Nutrition
Q: Best types of isometrics and eccentrics for strength/athleticism?
They discuss lower-leg isometrics and dynamic overcoming isometrics (e.g., RDL with pins, pulling into pins at heavy loads), plus contrasting to explosive movements for potentiation. They provide concrete progressions from long-duration to loaded, time-limited holds and finishing with max effort, and show how to weave these into training blocks.
Q&A Answered with Will Ratelle: Training/Nutrition
Q: How many nicotine pouches do you take in a day or nicotine milligrams?
They discuss using nicotine pouches at varying levels (Will uses three pouches at three milligrams; increases during fat loss phases; previously used six pouches at six milligrams, and a period with no nicotine). They emphasize moderation, sensitivity changes after hiatus, and that nicotine is a tool similar to caffeine with considerations for blood pressure and heart rate.
Ep. 89: Dr. Katie Dabrowski, Rehab should look like training!
Q: What is your stance on passive therapies and foam rolling in rehab?
Foam rolling is not a primary driver of tissue changes; it can feel beneficial, but the biggest gains come from movement-based prep, load, and targeted exercises that raise heart rate and simulate actual training demands.
Ep. 89: Dr. Katie Dabrowski, Rehab should look like training!
Q: How do you see training and rehab existing on the same spectrum, and how should clinicians approach this?
Training and rehab share core physiological principles; the main differences are dosage and psychological aspects. Rehab should incorporate progressive overload, exposure to meaningful movement, and strategies to reduce fear while aligning with the patient's goals.
