The Legal Mistakes That Kill Gym Sales (With Matt Becker of Gym Lawyers)
Q: How do you structure engagement with clients (retainer vs. project-based)?
Most work is on a flat-fee per project basis rather than hourly or open-ended retainers, with plans for a subscription program; this helps gym owners predict costs upfront.
The Legal Mistakes That Kill Gym Sales (With Matt Becker of Gym Lawyers)
Q: What are the core services you offer to new gym owners seeking compliance?
We help with the essential legal entity setup (LLC or corporation), lease agreements with favorable tenant terms, liability waivers, and staff agreements (independent contractor vs. employee), plus ongoing advisory support.
The Legal Mistakes That Kill Gym Sales (With Matt Becker of Gym Lawyers)
Q: What is Gym Lawyers and why did you choose that niche?
Gym Lawyers is a national law firm focused on the fitness industry; the idea came from connecting the founder's gym ownership experience with legal compliance to help gym owners, not just provide generic forms, but tailor advice to state laws and industry specifics.

Q: What would you tell yourself14–16 years ago if you could give yourself advice about starting and scaling this business?
If you have an ambitious objective, quantify the worst-case scenario, accept a financial hit if needed, and proceed anyway—because the upside impact of a successful expansion is disproportionately higher than the temporary setback, and it can fuel subsequent growth if you persevere.
Learn how this gym generates $1.4M with only 280 members
Q: And how are you approaching leases and financing for expansion—how do you position the business to be bankable when negotiating with landlords?
We leverage our 16-year track record to gain credibility with landlords, push for landlord-funded build-outs, and negotiate long-term leases (10 years) with TI subsidies. We emphasize the stability of a multi-location operator, backed by a strong pipeline and a centralized admin that streamlines operations across sites.
